Vision Theatre Company brings a legend to life in Judy – The Judy Garland Musical

THE WORD legend is frequently used to describe stars and celebrities – but few deserve the accolade more than Judy Garland.

The former child star – who was literally chewed up and spat out by the Hollywood studio system of the 40s and 50s – is one of the best known – and best-loved – movie performers of all time.

Her life was a litany of tragedy – some self-induced – far more inflicted upon her by Hollywood and by the people around her.

And now her story is the subject of a fabulous musical, written by Terry Wale – and it is the latest offering from Vision Theatre Company, based at Vision Arts, the new performing arts hub for Pembrokeshire, in Haverfordwest.

Fresh from their triumphant production of Evita, at the Queen’s Hall, in Narberth last month, Vision Theatre Company is now taking on Judy – The Judy Garland Musical; featuring numbers such as The Trolley Song, You Made Me Love You and, of course, Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Vision’s Creative Director Drew Baker will be at the helm with young Judy played by Poppy Howells and Terri Harrison as Judy in later life.

Performances take place at Boulevard Showbar, in Charles Street, Milford Haven between May 17-21 at 7.30pm.

‘John and Alun’ to perform in Letterston Memorial Hall concert

LETTERSTON Memorial Hall says it is thrilled to announce its hosting of a captivating bi-lingual concert, made possible through the Arts Council of Wales’ esteemed ‘Night Out’ scheme. This initiative facilitates performances by professional artistes in remote rural communities, with additional support from Pembrokeshire County Council. Set to take place on Friday, 23rd June, the event will feature the widely recognised S4C duo, ‘John and Alun,’ with Reverend Geoffrey Eynon assuming the role of compère for the evening.

Hailing from Wales, John and Alun have cemented their status as veterans in the realm of country music. Their popularity is evident through their successful Radio Cymru show, broadcasted on Sunday evenings, as well as their appearance in four series of their own television programme. With an impressive discography of eight albums in Welsh and one in English, their musical journey began in 1991 when they released their debut album, which received a gold disc from their label, SAIN, in 1992 for selling an impressive 12,000 copies.

Interestingly, John and Alun’s shared history can be traced back to their school days in the picturesque North Wales village of Tudweiliog. Whilst most of their songs are original compositions, they have also collaborated with renowned Welsh poets and novelists, including the late Eirug Wyn.

Tickets for this highly anticipated concert can be purchased at various locations, including Letterston village shops and Naturals in Fishguard. For further enquiries, individuals can get in touch with Babs at 07875 217699. The organisers have made arrangements to ensure the availability of disabled facilities, guaranteeing an inclusive experience for all attendees.

This exceptional musical event promises an evening of unforgettable performances by John and Alun, providing the residents of Letterston and its surrounding communities with a unique opportunity to enjoy the talents of these esteemed artists in their very own rural setting.

Vegan festival is first outdoor event of its kind for Pembrokeshire

THERE’S a new vegan festival on the summer horizon this year – and the first outdoor event of its kind to come to Pembrokeshire.

VegOut West, taking place on August 19-20, is a very affordable family camping event with weekend tickets for adults priced at just £40, £20 entry for 6–16-year-olds and no charge for under 6s.

The ticket price also includes yoga, workshops and a line-up of activities, putting it within the reach of those looking for cheaper options for the school holidays.

It also promises to be a smorgasbord of summer sounds, veritable vegan feasting as well as the chance to take part in crafts, pottery and even soothing therapies – to fully unwind and relax.

Comedian Joe Lycett stirred VegOut West’s organisers Carwyn Ratcliffe and Jo into action – they attended his recent tour where he left a lasting impression, and you could say something to pin their festival hopes on.

VegOut West will similarly raise money for good causes with all monies made going to Greenpeace as well as supporting the local area through ‘LARC’ Llanteg and Amroth Renaturing Community – providing and enhancing local green spaces.

On sale on Joe’s tour were badges featuring the inscription “sometimes if you want something to exist you have to make it yourself.” The badges, designed by Josie Long, have already made around £57,000 for the Arts Emergency charity which Josie co-founded.

The event, which it is hoped will become an annual fixture in the vegan festival calendar, is located on an idyllic six-acre site in Llanteg and has family fun and the chance to hang out with like-minded vegans at its heart. There’s a vast array of music to chill out to including rock, pop, drum and bass, house and hip hop provided by DJs. It’s just a short distance from Amroth Beach – and minibuses will be on hand for those wanting to take a refreshing plunge in the sea.

They’ll be colour in every corner – first up the food – with vegan pizza being produced specifically for the event as well as bountiful burgers from Vegan Filth and vegan ice-cream. There’ll be a licenced bar and soft drinks.

Pottery making and painting are also on offer and why not try ‘dotting’ – the art of painting dots and making them into a pattern. The practice of using all kinds of soothing sounds to help emotional wellbeing is also on offer.

There’s also yoga, a nerf gun battleground area and, to wind down, a selection of board games to enjoy.
