Lifeboats called off as search scaled back for missing crew member
FIVE RNLI lifeboats involved in a multi-agency search off the Pembrokeshire coast have returned to station after the search was scaled back by HM Coastguard.
Volunteer lifeboat crews from St Davids, Fishguard, Angle and Little and Broad Haven were told they could return to their respective stations at about 2.30pm on Friday (Apr 29).
The lifeboats from St Davids and Fishguard resumed the search at 6am in an area between St Davids and Strumble Head, along with Coastguard Rescue Teams and the Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter. Lifeboats from Angle and Little and Broad Haven launched in the late morning to extend the search area to St Brides Bay.
Lifeboats were first tasked to launch at 2.30pm on Thursday to search for the crew of a fishing boat which hit rocks a mile offshore off Abereiddy beach and subsequently sank.
Five RNLI lifeboats were involved last evening, two all-weather lifeboats and an inshore lifeboat from St Davids and all-weather lifeboats from Angle and Fishguard.
The search was stood down for the night at 9.30pm.
One person was taken out of the water and taken to hospital yesterday by HM Coastguard. Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed today they had sadly died.
Jim Phillips, Lifeboat Press Officer at St Davids RNLI, told The Herald: “Our thoughts are with all those involved at this difficult time.
“Our volunteer lifeboat crews, working alongside the HM Coastguard Rescue Teams, covered a large area of sea in difficult conditions for more than 15 hours yesterday and today to search for the remaining missing person, but unfortunately they were not located.”
Alex Smith, National Maritime Operations Controller, for UK Coastguard said:“Despite an intensive search including the helicopter, RNLI lifeboats and Coastguard Rescue Teams we have been unable to locate the remaining missing crew. Our thoughts are with all those involved”
Dyfed-Powys Police Sergeant Gareth Walters told The Herald: “Specialist officers are continuing to support the families involved in this tragic incident.”

Tigers second division Cup Champions
In a thrilling Pembrokeshire Division Two Cup final under the floodlights of Bridge Meadow Stadium, fans witnessed an epic battle between Monkton Swifts reserves and Johnston. Despite Monkton Swifts reserves being touted as favorites, Johnston proved their mettle from the outset.
The game kicked off with a burst of energy as Johnston’s center half, Craig Bendall, seized an early opportunity to put his team ahead just ten minutes into the match. However, Monkton Swifts’ prolific Scotsman, Davis, swiftly responded with an equalizer, showcasing the resilience of the favourites.
The momentum shifted again when the dynamic duo of Alfie and Scott Crawford of Johnston orchestrated a beautifully executed goal, putting Johnston back in the lead at 2-1.
As the game progressed, Monkton Swifts brought in reinforcements, including Ben Steele, to regain control. Their efforts paid off when Jordan Kilby leveled the score at 2-2 with just under 20 minutes remaining.
But the Crawfords had other plans. Combining once more, Scott provided the assist for Alfie, who coolly finished to put Johnston ahead once again.
With time running out, Monkton Swifts launched a relentless onslaught in search of an equalizer. However, Johnston’s defense held firm, defying the odds to clinch the Division Two Cup title in a memorable victory.
The match showcased the passion and determination of both teams, with Johnston emerging as deserving champions in a fiercely contested final at Bridge Meadow Stadium.
