Hottest new talent on show

Published

on

new talentTHIS spring the award-winning National Dance Company Wales (NDCWales) will be presenting work by some of the most celebrated choreographers alongside creations by the hottest new talent from Wales.

With nominations for the second year running from the Theatre Critics of Wales Awards, NDCWales continues to produce outstanding work that is both challenging and entertaining.

Following a special performance at British Dance Edition in Glasgow, NDCWales opens the main tour in one of its regular Welsh venues, Aberystwyth Arts Centre before moving to home ground with a performance at Sherman Theatre, Cardiff then heading across Wales and the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven on Tuesday, March 18. Technical Director and resident designer Joe Fletcher is taking his own creation with House Choreographer and NDCWales Rehearsal Director Lee Johnston on tour for the first time and will be presenting one of two works.

Joe said “I’m extremely proud to be taking my own work on the road this spring. Lee and I have collaborated for a number of years and watching our work evolve into the two pieces we are now touring has been a delight and a highlight of my time with the Company.”

The programme also includes Stephen Petronio’s Water Stories, created in the Dance House last autumn, and Stephen Shropshire’s Mythology, originally created in 2012 for Noord Nederlands Dans.

Stephen Petronio; Water Stories

Stephen Petronio premieres his new creation for NDCWales, with music from Grammy-winning composer Atticus Ross, who created the score for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and original visual design from Matthew Brandt.

Lee Johnston; Purlieus and They Seek To Find the Happiness They Seem

In collaboration with lighting designer Joe Fletcher, Lee has created two beautiful and awe-inspiring works. Purlieus explores the relationship between movement, light and animation to create an immersive experience for both performer and audience; They Seek To Find The Happiness They Seem uses existing forms of choreography, lighting and costume design to explore dislocation and separation within a relationship.

Stephen Shropshire; Mythology

Stephen Shropshire’s thought-provoking piece is a mesmerising work complemented by Frederic Rzewski’s Coming Together, an avant-garde composition for piano, jazz ensemble and spoken word.

National Dance Company of Wales arrive in Milford Haven for one night only on Tuesday, March 18 at 7:30pm. Tickets are available now by calling 01646 695267 or by visiting the website torchtheatre.co.uk

Mother admits to killing seven-year-old son in Haverfordwest

A mother has admitted to the manslaughter of her seven-year-old son at their home in Haverfordwest, citing diminished responsibility.

Papaipit Linse, 43, appeared at Swansea Crown Court on Friday (Nov 22), where she denied murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of her son, Louis Linse. Prosecutor Caroline Rees KC confirmed the manslaughter plea would be accepted, stating it “did not come as a surprise” to the prosecution.

The incident occurred on 10 January when police were called to a property on Upper Market Street. Louis was rushed to Withybush General Hospital but tragically died shortly afterwards.

During the hearing, Linse, who spoke only to confirm her name and enter her pleas, was informed that she would be sentenced on 13 December. Judge Paul Thomas KC described the case as “clearly a very sensitive as well as a very tragic case.”

The court was told that Linse is currently receiving treatment at the Caswell Clinic, a mental health facility in Bridgend. Psychiatric evidence is expected to be presented during the sentencing hearing to provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding the case.
