10-man Ferry stun Bluebirds

HAVERFORDWEST County were beaten 3-2 by 10-man Briton Ferry Llansawel this evening (Feb 2) as a goal from Scott Tomlinson sealed victory in an entertaining game at the Bridge Meadow.

A good crowd gathered to watch the game but they saw the Bluebirds make a slow start and the visitors could have been ahead in the third minute.

Steve Hughes cut inside the defender but saw his shot blocked only for the ball to then be fizzed across goal for Tyler Brock who saw his shot saved by County keeper Conah McFenton.

From the resulting corner Gareth Jones rose highest to head into the top left corner to give his side a deserved lead.

Dan Williams was a constant threat for the Bluebirds and he saw a shot go over soon after as the home side started to get back into the game.

Declan Carroll and Williams once more went close before Steffan Williams headed down for Kristian Speake but his shot hit the side netting.

With twenty minutes gone the Bluebirds were rewarded when a free kick from Matthew Broome found Captain Sean Pemberton who headed in unmarked to level the scores.

Dan Williams then ran into the box before cutting back for namesake Steffan but his shot flew over the bar.

Seven minutes before half time, Dan again crossed for Steffan but his shot was saved well by the Briton Ferry keeper.

The visitors weathered the Bluebirds’ storm and it remained 1-1 when the half time whistle went.

Early in the second half, Dan Williams again went close after being put through in what was a good chance for the home side.

They were made to pay for that miss as Briton Ferry launched an attack which saw Tyler Brock cut inside and shoot low under McFenton to put the visitors back into the lead.

On the hour mark, Briton Ferry’s Brock got in the way of a quick free kick and, having already been booked, the referee pulled out a second yellow followed by a red, and Brock was sent for an early bath.

Broome then saw the resultant free kick tipped over the bar by Ferry keeper Luke Probert.

Two minutes later the Bluebirds were level again in spectacular fashion as a cross into the box found Dan Williams, who had beat the offside trap, and he got on the end of it to wonderfully lob the ball into the net.

However, any thoughts the Bluebirds had of going on to win the game were dealt a blow just two minutes later as a ball into the box saw Scott Tomlinson also beat the offside trap and head the ball past McFenton to give Briton Ferry the lead for a third time.

McFenton was then lucky as his clearance was charged down by a Briton Ferry player but the ball deflected to a Blue shirt.

Kristian Speake went close again as his deflected shot from the edge of the box was well tipped round the post by the keeper.

Joe Leahy saw a late shot blocked as the Bluebirds piled on the pressure looking for a late equaliser that never came.

The Ferry were content to keep the ball in the corner and after a lengthy injury time the referee brought an end to the match.

Defeat for the Bluebirds is just their second of the season and means they missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Welsh League Division 1 table.

The Bluebirds are next in action on Saturday, February 10, when they travel to Cambrian and Clydach.

Five youth team players earn praise after impressing at championship level

CRYMYCH RUGBY CLUB has hailed the contribution of five of its youth players after they stepped up to feature in a senior side at championship level.

The young players, who remain part of the club’s youth setup, were given the opportunity to test themselves in a higher-level fixture, and impressed coaches and supporters alike with their attitude and commitment on the field.

Club representatives said it was “fantastic to see” the dedication shown by the youngsters, who rose to the occasion in what was described as a special experience for both the players and the club.

The match provided a valuable opportunity for development, allowing the next generation of Crymych players to gain experience in a more competitive environment while contributing to the senior squad.

The rugby club said the move reflects its long-term focus on nurturing homegrown talent and creating a clear pathway from youth rugby into the senior game.

Officials added that the future of the club looks bright, with the performance of the young “Teirw” – or Bulls – offering reassurance that the next generation is ready to carry the club forward.

The club congratulated the players on their achievement and said it hopes to see more youth players progressing through the ranks in the coming seasons.

Under 13s and under 14s progress after District H finals day success

TENBY UNITED RFC’s junior sides enjoyed a memorable District H finals day, with two age groups securing victories and places in the West Wales cup finals.

The club’s under 13s lifted silverware after beating Crymych 32-17, while the under 14s edged a thrilling contest against Neyland, winning 18-17.

Tenby’s under 12s were also involved in a close match, narrowly losing 31-28 to Haverfordwest.

The under 13s and under 14s will now go on to represent the club at the West Wales cup finals at Parc y Scarlets on May 24.

Tenby United RFC congratulated the young Swifts on their achievements, saying: “Well done Swifts.”

Carew set early pace as rain disrupts Pembrokeshire cricket programme

RAIN played a major part in Week 2 of the Nicholas Insurance Thomas Carroll Pembroke County Cricket League, with several Division 1 fixtures abandoned after strong first-innings performances.

Carew made the biggest statement in the top flight, cruising to a ten-wicket win over St Ishmaels to move clear at the top of the table.

St Ishmaels were bowled out for 110, with Tim Hicks (3-18), Shaun Whitfield (3-14) and Logan Hall (2-27) doing the damage. Carew then eased to 111-0, Hicks completing an outstanding all-round display with 55 not out, alongside Morgan Grieve’s unbeaten 54.

Elsewhere, Narberth piled up 301-7 before rain intervened against Herbrandston, Jamie McCormack hitting a superb 104. Lawrenny (297-7) and Burton (203-7) also posted big totals before the weather had the final say.

Johnston sit top after a dominant 135-run win over Llangwm, powered by Lewis Boswell’s 99 and Steve Mills’ 62.

Hook maintained their perfect start, edging Haverfordwest by four wickets, while Cresselly II brushed aside Llechryd by nine wickets after bowling them out for just 41.
