Banner and Hannon see champs to victory

Published

The Town’s Simon ‘Doc’ Holliday made 67 valuable runs for his side.

Neyland (170-9) beat Haverfordwest (169-9) by 1 wkt NATHAN BANNER and Sean Hannon were the heroes for Neyland on Saturday as they guided their side to a one-wicket win over Haverfordwest.

Banner was also busy in the field as he took the first three wickets of Haverfordwest’s innings and then took two catches late on. Those wickets saw the Town struggling on 47-3, but Simon Holliday and AJ Revu shared a partnership of 64 to get their back on track. Revu was caught by Gregg Miller off the bowling of Nicholas Koomen on 33 as wickets continued to fall, and they were reduced to 128-6 as Koomen took his second wicket of the game. That brought Huw Scriven to the crease and he supported his opening batsmen well as he and Holliday added 31 for the seventh wicket. Holliday was eventually caught by Ashley Sutton off the bowling of Andrew Miller for 67. Miller was not done there and he took two further wickets to leave Haverfordwest on 169-9. Any thoughts Neyland had that the target might be an easy one to chase were soon extinguished as they were reduced to 15-2 in their reply. Ashley Sutton and Nicholas Koomen shared 38 for the next wicket, but Haverfordwest’s Adam James was again in fine form as he had both batsmen trapped LBW. Andrew Miller scored 32 before he was caught by Jonathan Strawbridge off the bowling of AJ Revu. Nathan Banner and Sean Hannon remained calm to guide their side over the line. Hannon was not out on 15 while Banner was his side’s top scorer with 47 from 46 balls.

Promotion, relegation and everything in between.

As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.

We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.

Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.

At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
