Neyland prove too strong for Carew
NEYLAND maintained their unbeaten start to the 2021 season with victory over Carew on Saturday (May 22).
The home side won the toss but elected to field and they were able to bowl Carew out for just 122.
Things did not start well for the visitors as they lost Brian Hall and James Hinchcliffe to slip to 8-2.
Nathan Banner and Patrick Hannon claimed their respective wickets with both batsmen falling on scores of 1.
Tim and Lewis Hicks then looked to steady the ship but Hannon struck again to remove Lewis who had made a score of 20.
That left Carew on 34-3 and it soon became 48-5.
Ross Hardy was brought on and he removed Rhys Davies, trapping him lbw, before bowling Morgan Grieve with the next ball.
Opener Tim Hicks remained but he kept losing partners as Hardy wasn’t finished.
The score became 64-6 when he had Nick Davies caught by Henry Durrant and it was soon 78-7 as he caught and bowled Shaun Whitfield.
Tim was joined by Iori Hicks and the pair took the score past 100 to frustrate Neyland.
The pair put on 27 runs but that partnership was broken by Hardy who claimed his fifth wicket. He trapped him lbw and the opener departed having made an excellent score of 56 with five boundaries.
Iori was trapped leg before by Brad McDermott-Jenkins soon after on a score of 11 and the innings came to a close when Durrant bowled Sion Jenkins.
That set Neyland 123 to win the game but they lost Ashley Sutton early in their reply as he was trapped leg before by Rhys Davies.
Nick Koomen and Henry Durrant shared 36 runs for the second wicket but that partnership was broken by Jenkins who bowled Koomen on a score of 24.
That left Neyland on 48-2 but another stand of 26 between Durrant and Brad McDermott-Jenkins edged the home side closer to victory.
Rhys Davies then had McDermott-Jenkins caught by Morgan Grieve on a score of 18 as Neyland were reduced to 74-3.
That was the last of the wickets though as Durrant and Nathan Banner saw their side over the line.
Banner finished unbeaten on 29 from 28 balls with five fours while Durrant finished on 39 not out (four fours).

Promotion, relegation and everything in between.
As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.
We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.
Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.
At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
