Little and Broad Haven RNLI assist with dramatic cliff rescue

Published

on

THE volunteer lifeboat crew were paged and launched at approximately 6.49pm on Monday evening (May 27). Arriving on scene, the crew found two of the reported casualties had made their own way to safety but there were still two others in difficulty. A member of the lifeboat crew went ashore to carry out an immediate casualty care assessment and provide reassurance, whilst he Coastguard Cliff Rescue Teams from Broad Haven, St Davids and Dale setup up a rope rescue operation.

The Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Newquay was also tasked to provide air support, but the joint assessment was that the rope recovery by the Coastguard Cliff Rescue Teams would be the safest and most effective method.

Lifeboat Helm Matthew Ford said: ‘When the boat arrived on scene the tide was too low for us to carry out the rescue without the casualties running the risk of entering the water. Having put one of the crew ashore to check their wellbeing, a joint decision was made that the most effective way to get them to safety was for the Coastguard Cliff Rescue Teams to bring them to the cliff top using their rope rescue equipment.’

Little and Broad Haven Lifeboat Press Officer, Denys Bassett-Jones commented:”‘We are extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful coastline on our doorstep that is enjoyed by millions of visitors every year. What this rescue shows however, is that even a slight detour from the marked coastal paths can turn a wonderful day out into a serious situation quite quickly.

“Luckily the people involved in this incident did the right thing and phoned 999 when they recognised they were in danger and help arrived soon after their call. This was a fantastic collaborative effort between rescue services and the casualties involved were brought to safety unharmed.”

The lifeboat was stood down once the casualties had been safely recovered and the crew returned to station for washdown and refuelling.

Gaza march supported by Plaid’s Mid & South Pembs candidate Cris Tomos

Published

on

THE MARCH for Gaza took place in Haverfordwest on Saturday the 29th of June. There were several speakers who called on the UK government to stop the sales of arms to Israel and to call for an immediate ceasefire. The only election candidate to attend was Cris Tomos of Plaid Cymru.

Cris gave a speech to reinforce that he and Plaid Cymru have been consistently calling for a peaceful ceasefire in Gaza, and the release of all hostages and a negotiated end to the conflict. The Plaid Cymru’s motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in November 2023 was passed by our Senedd.

Cris noted “Recognising the State of Palestine is an essential step towards peace in the region,” he continued “Plaid Cymru condemns in the strongest possible terms the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7th, the murder of tens of thousands of innocent civilians in the region, and the horrific genocide committed by the Israeli Government against the people of Gaza. Amnesty International classifies the State of Israel as an apartheid state, which has received the direct and indirect support of Western governments, including the United Kingdom.”

Cris Tomos and Plaid Cymru further believes that Israeli Government Ministers responsible for war crimes, including genocide, should be held accountable by international courts for their actions. I will demand that the UK Government enforces all decisions made by the International Criminal Court, including acting on all arresting warrants it issues. I further call on the UK Government to expel the Israeli ambassador until such time as the Israeli Government ends its apartheid and illegal actions. If elected I will also demand a ban on all arms sales to the state of Israel.

Plaid Cymru opposed and voted against the Economic Activity of Public Bodies (Overseas Matters) Bill which was aimed at preventing public authorities from participating in boycotts, divestment and sanctions campaigns.

Cris Tomos of Plaid Cymru supports all campaigns against oppressive states using any peaceful methods including boycotts, divestment and sanctions, and commits to protecting the human right to protest free of hindrance, crackdown or unfair restriction.

Abuse of process claim at planning enforcement hearing

Published

on

A COURT hearing at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court, was adjourned yesterday in the case of Guy Richard Latrobe, 56, of The Coal Yard, Crymych. The case involves allegations of breaching an enforcement notice issued by Pembrokeshire County Council.

The defendant, Mr Latrobe, stands accused of failing to comply with an enforcement notice regarding land south of The Coal Yard in Crymych, issued on 7th November 2018. The alleged breaches occurred between 10th March 2020 and 17th November 2021. The charges are brought under section 179(2) and (8) of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, which pertains to the enforcement of planning controls and the failure to adhere to specified steps mandated by the local council.

The hearing, which took place on 27th June 2024, saw Mr Latrobe present in court, represented by his solicitor, Harry Dickens. Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Mr Latrobe is not currently in custody and remains on unconditional bail.

During the morning session, the defence raised an argument citing ‘abuse of process’. This led to the adjournment of the case, with the next hearing scheduled for August 6 at 10:00am.

The adjournment was granted to allow Pembrokeshire County Council to respond to the defence’s skeleton argument by July 25. This response will be crucial in determining the next steps of the legal process.

Additionally, during the session, there were changes made to Mr Latrobe’s personal details as noted in the court records.

As the case continues, all eyes will be on the forthcoming arguments regarding the alleged abuse of process and the subsequent response from Pembrokeshire County Council. The outcome of the hearing on 6th August will be pivotal in resolving this ongoing dispute.
