Herbie pay the penalty

A LATE penalty miss cost Herbrandston the chance to take all three points from their game with Neyland at the Athletic Ground on Saturday (Mar 17).

Both sides were keen to pick up the win but neither were able to make the breakthrough in a tight first half which referee Angus Scourfield brought to a close with the score goalless.

Early in the second half, Neyland could have gone ahead when Henry Durrant’s cross into the box was not dealt with by Herbie keeper Gareth Marshallsay as he knocked the ball into the path of Andrew Smith but his shot was blocked off the line by Mark Jones.

At the other end Marc Boswell crossed into the box for Archie Macallum but his shot went over the bar.

On the hour mark Herbie had one of the best chances to go ahead as Macallum did well to keep the ball in and cross into the box and as the Neyland defence appealed, Scott Findlay could only send his shot over the bar.

Andrew Davies then played in sub Jack Button for the home side but he sent his shot wide of the right hand post.

Durrant then won the ball back and looked to shoot but his effort also went wide of the posts.

Neyland’s Ben Fairbairn crossed into the box but Sean Hannon did not get enough on the header as the ball flew wide.

Lewis Nicholas played well on the wing for Herbie and he sent a dangerous cross into the box which was cleared well by Neyland.

Sub Michael Atyeo also saw a header blocked wide for the visitors before, with fifteen minutes to go, Herbie came closest of the two sides to scoring.

Lee James had not been on the field long and he picked up the ball on the edge of the box but saw his effort deflected onto the bar and over.

Mike Chandler also saw a shot saved as both sides were keen to pick up the three points in the snowy conditions.

Lewis Nicholas then made his way into the box once more and he crossed for sub Oliver West but his shot was blocked wide.

Fairburn was then yellow carded as he kicked the ball away and that would prove to be costly.

With three minutes to go Atyeo sent a ball forward which was carried by the wind and keeper Jim Payne had to be alert to tip it over the bar.

Then as the clock ticked over ninety minutes, Fairburn was penalised for a pull in the box and the referee pointed to the spot before also showing him a second yellow card.

Mark Jones stepped up to take the penalty but he fired it high and wide and moments later the whistle was blown for full time.

It was a bitter blow to Herbie’s hopes of getting out of the bottom two and they are now six points behind third from bottom Angle.

On Saturday (Mar 24) Herbie are away to Carew while Neyland are also on their travels as they play Milford United.

Kilgetty and Carew Share Spoils in End-of-Season Showdown

In the picturesque setting of Kilgetty, under the soft glow of the evening sun, local football fans were treated to an enticing clash between Kilgetty and Carew in the Pembrokeshire League Division 1. With the season winding down, both sides took to the pitch amidst numerous squad rotations, following a hectic week of multiple fixtures.

The match kicked off in a leisurely pace, resembling more of an end-of-season friendly than a fierce competition. Kilgetty seized the early initiative, with the trio of Josh Bevan, Richard Tebbut, and Richard Cope causing headaches for the Carew defense, skillfully led by Gareth Lewis. It was Jac Waters who broke the deadlock for the home side, putting Kilgetty ahead 1-0 as the first half came to a close.

However, Carew emerged revitalised after the break, with Jonty Bennett, James Hinchcliffe, and Zac Rowell putting in the hard yards to level the score. The introduction of Harvey Drummond for the ineffective Sam Christopher added further depth to Carew’s attacking prowess, culminating in an equaliser courtesy of the excellent Hinchcliffe.

As tensions rose, the game took on a newfound intensity, marked by needless bookings, after a clearly offside goal and a few heated moments on the field. Despite the fatigue evident from their recent fixture congestion, both teams showcased their competitive spirit, treating the fans to an entertaining second half.

In the end, neither side could break the deadlock, with Kilgetty and Carew having to settle for a well-fought 1-1 draw. While neither team was at their absolute best, the match provided a fitting conclusion to their respective seasons.

The stage is set – Senior Cup Final

It’s the time of the year again, Saturday see’s Bridge Meadow host the senior cup final. The sun has been shining and both teams will be dying to get on the pitch. This year the final will be contested by Goodwick United and Clarbeston Road.

League champions Goodwick will go into the final as favourites, and most around the county expect a Goodwick win. It has been an outstanding season for Goodwick however cup success has evaded them so far. Clarbeston Road have impressed everyone this season and really deserve their place in this years final.

Neill Crawshaw will referee the game, with Tudor Walters and Stefan Jenkins running the line.

There will be a unique contest on the pitch as brothers Will Haworth and Laurie Haworth come face to face on opposing teams. Adrian their father was a great player in the county, and played in many cup finals himself.

The stage is set, Clarby will feel less pressure than Goodwick and will be a threat with Haworth, John and Davies in attack. Meanwhile Goodwick are also blessed with quality players in every department, there is no weak link in O’Sullivans team. Cup football and finals in particular never go as people predict. On paper Goodwick are firm favourites, Clarbeston Road will be happy the game will be played on grass though and not paper, anything can happen! Hopefully it’ll be a good crowd down at the Meadow for the show piece of Pembrokeshire football.

70 Pembrokeshire clubs benefit from Sport Wales funding

SEVENTY Pembrokeshire clubs have been successful in receiving grants from the Be Active Wales Fund over the last financial year.

In total the clubs received more than £407,800 from the grants scheme from Sport Wales in 2023/24.

The fund backed 25 different sports, ranging from archery, basketball and cricket to sailing, short mat bowls and weightlifting and everything in between.

The Be Active Wales Fund is open to applications from not for profit community clubs and groups to help develop and sustain their activities.

Grants range from a minimum of £300 up to a maximum of £50,000.

The scheme will support coach education courses, the purchase of essential items of equipment right up to larger projects such as floodlighting and boats for sailing clubs.
