RNLI Cardigan Lifeboat Crew respond to two incidents in one day
THE RNLI Cardigan Lifeboat crew was called into action twice on Friday, responding to separate incidents on the waters of Cardigan Bay and the nearby estuary.
The first callout occurred at 9:54 am when the lifeboat crew was alerted to a drifting small craft in Cardigan Bay. Upon arrival at the station, the shore crew spotted the vessel far out at sea, enabling the Atlantic 85 lifeboat to proceed directly to its location. The craft, which was unoccupied, had apparently broken free from its moorings.
To prevent the drifting vessel from becoming a hazard to other boats or leading to another callout further along the coast, the crew made the decision to tow it to a temporary mooring within the estuary. This operation allowed crew members to practice their towing skills. The lifeboat was refuelled and ready for service by 12:30 pm.
The crew members involved in this first incident were:
- Helm: Mark W
- Crew: Tony, Lisa, Sarah M
- Launch Authority: Louise
- Launch Vehicle Driver: Stewart
- Shore Crew: Rachel (Head Launcher), Ian, Gwyn, Leo, Madeleine, Sarah J, Sophie, Pete
This marked the first callout for new crew member Sophie.
Later in the day, at 6:15 pm, the crew was tasked with a second incident involving a person in a small craft struggling to make progress upriver near Patch, in the estuary. The crew, working alongside HM Coastguard – Cardigan, located the boat, which was unable to move against the river’s flow. The craft’s owner requested assistance and was towed to their mooring at Netpool, where they were left in the care of the Coastguard team.
Following the successful tow, the lifeboat was back in service by 8:00 pm.
The crew members for this second incident were:
- Helm: Mark W
- Crew: Leo, Madeleine, Simon
- Launch Authority: Louise
- Launch Vehicle Driver: Mark V
- Shore Crew: Lewis (Head Launcher), Gwyn, Nikki, Rachel, Ian, Stewart, Pete, Lisa, Sam T, Tony, Bruce
This was also the first shout for new crew member Nikki.
The RNLI expressed their gratitude for the continued support of the local community, which helps ensure their readiness to respond to emergencies on the water.

The phantom bed banger of Observatory Avenue puzzles locals
IN a scene straight out of a soap opera, a quiet corner of Milford Haven has been rocked by scandal, handwritten letters, and nocturnal “banging” this week.
It all began in Observatory Avenue, Milford Haven, where an anonymous resident, who we’ll call “Anonymous Member,” received a cryptic letter accusing them of some rather, ahem, lively nighttime activities. However, there’s a twist in this juicy tale – the accused insists they live alone with only their dog for company!
“I was shocked! Allegations of late-night banging and… er… ‘activities’? That’s simply not true,” stated the bewildered resident on Milford Haven Community Watch’s Facebook page, where drama often unfolds with more twists than a daytime TV special.
The online sleuths of the group wasted no time in jumping into action. First up was local resident Sophi Forrest, who took on the role of unofficial detective. “Allegations of what?” she inquired, sparking a flurry of responses. It soon emerged that the accusations centred around suspicious night-time noises of an ahem “adult” nature.
“I live alone with my dog, and I’m always as quiet as a mouse,” our anonymous friend insisted. “It’s really upsetting me!” Another twist? “I don’t even have a headboard on my bed!” The plot thickens.
But Sophi, ever the pragmatist, had a sensible suggestion: “Do any of your neighbours have a Ring doorbell?” Not quite Sherlock Holmes, but it’s a modern take on the classic ‘whodunnit’ approach. Unfortunately, the trail soon ran cold, and the resident confessed to being too anxious to knock on doors and resolve the matter face-to-face. Anxiety, after all, is no friend to a midnight sleuth.
Not one to miss a chance for humour, another resident, Mike Stannett, chimed in with some sage advice: “Just turn ur TV down when ur watching it,” complete with a cheeky wink. Apparently, in Observatory Avenue, the line between Netflix and “chill” may have gotten a little too blurred for some.
But the mystery persists. With no clear evidence of late-night shenanigans and an empty bed frame to back it up, the origin of the hand-delivered note remains a riddle. Was it a prank? A case of mistaken identity? Or is there a mischievous phantom bed-banger haunting Observatory Avenue?
As the speculation continues, the resident remains resolute. “I’m always quiet and think of my neighbours,” they insisted, determined to clear their name from this scandalous saga.
If anything, Milford Haven has proven that even the quietest corners of town can deliver drama worthy of the front page. Meanwhile, locals are left scratching their heads (and perhaps double-checking their headboards) as the case of the midnight mystery unfolds.

New Home Bargains store set to open in Pembroke Dock
A NEW Home Bargains store is set to open in Pembroke Dock, promising a welcome boost to local employment and retail offerings. The discount retailer will officially launch on Friday, 26 October, occupying the site formerly held by Wilko on Pier Road.
The arrival of Home Bargains is expected to generate over 50 new jobs, with the majority being filled by local residents. Job openings range from store managers to team members, cleaners, and team leaders, with vacancies having been advertised online.
The store will take over the premises that Wilko vacated last September, following 15 years of service in the town. Wilko’s closure was part of a nationwide shutdown of 400 stores, following the company’s entry into administration.
Plans for the site have been approved by Pembrokeshire County Council, with permission granted for external changes to the building. These include a new shopfront, the installation of goods doors, and various refurbishments. The addition of condensers has also been greenlit to support the store’s operations.
Home Bargains, owned by TJ Morris Limited, has rapidly grown into one of the largest privately-owned companies in the UK, now boasting over 550 stores nationwide. The company’s expansion plans aim to surpass 1,000 outlets in the near future.
The announcement has sparked excitement in the local community, with many residents looking forward to the store’s opening. One enthusiastic shopper remarked on social media, “Book the day off, we have plans!”
Local officials have also expressed support for the new development. A report prepared for planners stated that the proposal would “enhance the functionality of the site, without detracting from or preventing the development of identified retail zones within the town centre.”
