County braced for deadly drugs

Killer pill: Superman tablet is causing fatalities

Killer pill: Superman tablet is causing fatalities

FOLLOWING the deaths of four people in the County of Suffolk, drug users nationwide, including those in Pembrokeshire, are warned that a new pill could have been responsible. The pill, known as ‘Superman’, and bearing the distinctive DC Comics icon, contains a high concentration of a chemical called PMMA. A batch of recently confiscated ‘Superman’ pills are believed, by Suffolk Police, to have accounted for the deaths of Grediminas Kulokas and Justas Ropas from Ipswich.

Dr David Nutt, who advised the last Government on drugs policy until 2009, blamed the current policy of targeting the production and sale of the illegal MDMA, as having left the door open to see it substituted by a more toxic substance. Dr Nutt said: “The emergence of the more toxic PMA following the so-called ‘success’ in reducing MDMA production is just one of many examples of how prohibition of one drug leads to greater harm from an alternative that is developed to overcome the block (illegality).”

The Herald asked both the local Police and Crime commissioner, and Dyfed-Powys Police force how they might deal with the on-going threat of, so-called, legal highs that are proving to be equally, if not more, dangerous than their illegal counterparts. Christopher Salmon said: “If Herald readers suspect the use of illegal drugs or other questionable substances in their neighbourhoods I urge them to call 101 and make the police aware. Those who deal in such substances damage our communities; the public can play a key role in bringing them to justice. “If you’re using, or thinking about using, recreational drugs – including new substances, I say beware – what you’re taking could put you in serious danger.”

A statement from Dyfed-Powys Police Force read: “We recognise that the impact of drug abuse can be devastating. Targeting drug suppliers and users is a priority for Dyfed Powys Police. “As a force, we also carry out a valuable education and prevention role within the community, which includes information and warnings about the dangers of using psychoactive substances. New psychoactive drugs frequently contain substances that can pose serious risk to public health and safety. “Our advice to anyone considering taking any substance is quite simply, don’t take it.”
