Crymych claim double over Ammanford

CRYMYCH welcomed Ammanford to Parc Lloyd Thomas expecting a tough game, although Ammanford had their cause made all the more difficult by a couple of late withdrawals.

However, the visitors started well despite playing into the strong wind, and the scrum looked to have the upper hand with a plan to hold on before the break and play for territory in the second half.

Things started to unravel when Ammanford lost their own line-out and a strong midfield break from the hosts ended with scrum-half Dyfan Dafydd darting over for a try from a ruck under the posts. Outside-half Sam Phillips added the extras.

Ammanford found themselves under goal-line pressure for long periods but managed to cling on despite a series of silly offloads while running into the wind which did little to relieve the pressure.

Under constant pressure from a Crymych, a up-and-under led to two Ammanford defenders running into each other, and – in trying to recover – Jake Baker tripped the home full-back and picked up a yellow card for his trouble. A Phillips penalty saw the hosts ease into a 10-0 lead.

With Baker off the field, another loose pass from the visitors was intercepted by centre Carwyn Phillips who ran in from 50 metres for a touchdown under the posts and an easy conversion from Phillips followed.

With two minutes left in the half Baker returned, but in a bid to make amends his enthusiasm proved too much for the referee’s liking and a second yellow turned red.

Forced to play out the entire second half with 14 men, Ammanford battled hard but were unable to make the most of the wind at their backs due to their lack of numbers.

The game went from one end to the other, but the only score of the half came courtesy of a 45metre penalty from Ammanford full back James Owen.

Ammanford spent the final ten minutes camped on the opposition line searching a losing bonus point, but it all proved too easy for the hosts to defend and Crymych ran out comfortable 17-3 victors.

Crymych now sit in seventh place, and travel to ninth place Amman United on Saturday (Feb 28).

Tomos Williams starts at scrum-half, with Ben Thomas making his Six Nations debut at fly-half. Owen Watkin and Nick Tompkins form the midfield pairing, while Tom Rogers is named on the wing alongside Adams.

Among the replacements, Nicky Smith is set to win his 50th cap, while fly-half Dan Edwards could make his senior Wales debut. Freddie Thomas and Blair Murray are in line for their first Six Nations appearances, having made their senior international debuts in the Autumn Nations Series.
