Griffin Inn named ‘Best Seafood Restaurant’
AT THE ANNUAL Food Awards Wales on Monday (Apr 18), it was announced that The Griffin Inn in Dale had been awarded the title of the ‘Best Seafood Restaurant’ in Wales.
The biggest event in the Welsh food calendar, the awards aim to recognise the hard work and efforts of the Welsh food industry. Accolades include restaurants, takeaways, gastro pubs, hotel restaurants, cafes and bistros, as well as shine the spotlight on the wonderful local producers who supply their delicious ingredients.
As well as the awards, the event helps raise funds for their official charity partner, Make A Wish Foundation UK, who grant magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions.
Irfan Younis, of event organisers Creative Oceanic, said: “The tremendous amount of nominations received from the Welsh public, is a testament to the hard work of all those working within the food sector.
The Griffin in Dale, Pembrokeshire had been shortlisted in the ‘Best Seafood Establishment’ category at the awards and this week they were crowned winners at the glamorous ceremony, which was held in Cardiff.
Speaking to The Herald on Wednesday (Apr 20) after their win, owner Sian Mathias said: “Simon and I are overwhelmed at winning this award. We really did not expect it. But this just shows that the hard work of the entire Griffin Inn team over the last six has paid off.”
Asked what she thought the key to success was, Sian told the Herald: “Two years ago we bought our own fishing boat with local fisherman Mark Gainfort, who catches anything from mackerel to sea bass, crab to lobster daily to ensure that the Griffin always has the freshest locally sourced sea food.
“Being situated right on the seafront in Dale, our customers love seeing the catch coming in off the boat, and then it being served to them a few hours later.
“You can’t get much fresher than that.”

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
