Haverfordwest church named in top 50 competition
TABERNACLE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH in Haverfordwest has been named as one of the 50 most beautiful and historic churches and chapels in the National Churches Trust’s ‘Sacred Wales’ – ‘Cymru Sanctaidd’ competition.
Members of the public now have the chance to vote for their favourite, which is available online at www.sacredwales.org.uk until August 31.
The winning church or chapel will be announced on September 28 and will receive a ‘Sacred Wales’ – ‘Cymru Sanctaidd’ trophy, together with a cheque for £500.
Huw Edwards, broadcaster and journalist, speaking at the launch of ‘Sacred Wales’ – ‘Cymru Sanctaidd’, said: “The churches and chapels of Wales are some of the most beautiful religious buildings anywhere in the world.”
“Now, ‘Cymru Sanctaidd’ – ‘Sacred Wales’, is giving you the opportunity to choose your favourite.”
“We should all care about the heritage of churches and chapels which help tell the story of Wales. So let’s work together to keep them alive.”
“If you’re looking for a venue to hold an event of a concert or community activity, why not pick one of your local churches or chapels.”
“If you’re any good at DIY, why not volunteer with some repair work.”
“Or if you’re simply looking for a day out in another part of Wales, why not pop into a church or chapel and discover the fascinating history.”
“The religious heritage of Wales belongs to all of us. So let’s celebrate it.”
Rev. Chris Gillham, Minister of Tabernacle Congregational Church, said: “It is an honour for Tabernacle to be listed amongst Wales’ top fifty churches and chapels.
“We are grateful that our ancestors gave us such a beautiful, light building and are keen to maintain it as one of Haverfordwest’s jewels. We are proud that for nearly 250 years it has served the people of the town and are anxious to continue that proud tradition.
“Of course, the Chapel is open for worship every Sunday, but it will have a special open day in connection with CADW’s Open Building scheme on Saturday, September 23.
“We shall be pleased to welcome visitors, show them the beautiful interior of the building, let them hear the organ and tell them something of its history.”

- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH)
- A second count of assault

Castlemartin man back before magistrates over multiple alleged assaults
Defendant remanded on conditional bail ahead of further hearing
A CASTLEMARTIN man has appeared repeatedly before magistrates this month over a string A 40-year-old man from Castlemartin has made repeated appearances before magistrates this month in connection with a series of serious alleged offences, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH), intentional non-fatal strangulation, common assault, and criminal damage.
Anthony Alcock, of Pwll Street, Castlemartin, is facing six linked charges stemming from incidents said to have occurred earlier this year. These appear to relate to the same complainant in what is understood to be a single ongoing domestic abuse prosecution.
During recent administrative hearings at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court, Alcock did not enter pleas while matters of bail and case management were addressed.
Charges Include:
- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH)
- Intentional non-fatal strangulation
- Common assault on a woman
- Criminal damage in a domestic context
- Additional assault allegations involving the same complainant
- Breach of bail conditions
Alcock was initially granted conditional bail but was subsequently brought before the court on two occasions for alleged breaches. On those instances, magistrates remanded him in custody ahead of further hearings. He was later re-granted conditional bail, subject to strict conditions such as no contact with the complainant and exclusion from specified locations.
Magistrates have now declined jurisdiction, ruling that the case—particularly the more serious charges involving non-fatal strangulation—is too grave for summary trial. It has been committed to Swansea Crown Court for plea, trial, or sentencing.
No detailed evidence has been presented in open court at this preliminary stage. Alcock remains on conditional bail pending his next appearance at the Crown Court.
