Fishguard power supply reinforcement welcomed by MP

BEN LAKE, MP for Ceredigion Preseli, has welcomed efforts to strengthen electricity supplies in Fishguard, following a visit to see National Grid Electricity Distribution’s (NGED) reinforcement work.
The MP met with engineers overseeing the project, which aims to enhance the resilience of the town’s power network while accommodating growing electricity demand. Engineers assured him that efforts were being made to minimise disruption to residents, despite the challenges of working on narrow streets.
Ben Lake MP said: “I was pleased to walk around the Fishguard reinforcement scheme with the National Grid Electricity Distribution team and meet their local contractors. These upgrades will increase the resilience of the electricity network, allowing residents to connect low-carbon technologies such as electric vehicles and heat pumps. They will also enable National Grid to restore power more quickly in the event of outages.”
Andrew Davies, NGED’s Head of Operations for West Wales, said: “We are carrying out essential reinforcement work in Fishguard to improve the resilience and reliability of the town’s electricity supply.
“This work will help meet both current and future electricity demand as we support the energy transition and drive economic growth.”

Llansteffan flood investigation report published

CARMARTHENSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL has published its Flood Investigation Report following flooding events in Llansteffan over the New Year period of 2023/24. The report examines the causes and impacts of the flooding and outlines recommendations to improve flood risk management in the area.
During two storms on 30 December 2023 and 2 January 2024, approximately 34 properties in Llansteffan were affected by flooding to varying degrees. While the recorded rainfall levels—19mm and 32mm respectively—were not exceptional, they followed an unusually prolonged wet period, making ground conditions highly saturated. This contributed to increased surface water runoff, which overwhelmed local watercourses. The flooding was further exacerbated by the burial of a key outfall under the beach, preventing effective drainage between the two storms.
To understand the events and impacts, three stakeholder engagement sessions were held in April 2024, allowing affected residents to share their experiences. The investigation also reviewed the response efforts of key agencies, including Carmarthenshire County Council, Natural Resources Wales, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
The report concludes with a series of actions aimed at improving flood risk management, enhancing community resilience, and reviewing maintenance and operational activities.
Cabinet Member for Transport, Waste and Infrastructure Services – Cllr Edward Thomas said:“Over a year has passed since this event in Llansteffan, however my thoughts are with those within the local community that were affected by the flooding and are still impacted by its devastating effect.
“Carmarthenshire County Council welcomes the publishing of the Flood Investigation Report and we will oversee the implementation of these recommendations through a multi-agency project group, which we will continue to chair in the short term. The Council remains committed to working closely with all relevant authorities and the local community to help mitigate future flood risks and enhance preparedness.”
