Winners: Station A presented with trophy

ANOTHER Pembroke & Pembroke Dock LVA quiz season has gone and what excitement it passed with.

The last Sunday of the season is the Cup quiz and Presentation night at the Station Inn, nine teams took part, sadly the St Govan’s Inn side missed it due to holidays, and what a close competition it proved to be with just seven points separating all the teams at the end of the eight rounds.

The First & Last side looked like they meant business dressed in their Baseball themed fancy dress and after the usually composed quiz coordinator and the night’s question master finally got his papers in order (apologies for the start delay) things were underway with an In the news round.

With the papers marked after every two rounds, first to show were the Alma but there was nothing in it and at the end of round four they had slipped back behind the Station A.

In to the pictures and round six and the Station B had levelled with the leaders with the Martello Club a point behind with the Alma, Golf Club and Oak another point away.

So to the last two rounds, TV Game/Quiz Show Hosts and Numbers culminating with the final question of the evening, what is 2016 in Roman numerals, and then it was down to the counting. With Les and Alan double checking the scores and checking again the result was in and showed the Golf Club and Charlton A on 74pts, the Martello Club 75 but the top score, 76, was shared by the Alma and the Station A so into a tie break.

The tie break question was: In which year did Czechoslovakia become the first country to make seat belts compulsory? A gasp from the players and time for the two teams to think. The Alma’s answer was 1968, the Station A’s unbelievable 1968 another gasp from the crowded quiz room (the answer was 1969).

Tie breaker 2: How tall is the Eiffel Tower in metres? Another pause for thought whilst the rest of the quizzers whispered among themselves, the two answers were collected and silence descended. The Alma’s answer was 108 metres, a ripple of sound, 185 metres was the Station A’s submission, further background rumblings, and the answer was revealed as a gigantic 324 metres.

A winner had been found and the Cup was retained by last year’s winners the Station A amid much applause for both teams, well done to both sides.

Before the presentations the Quiz coordinator thanked all the teams for taking part, Les and Alan as round collectors and markers, Debbie at the Alma for taking the results every week, the LVA for the trophies and Mine Host Don for the nights hospitality, especially the food.

It has been a tight finish to the league this year with the Golf Club scraping home on total quiz round points scored after a near Jordan Spieth type collapse, so congratulations to them.

The Chair lady of the Pembroke & Pembroke Dock LVA, Michelle Scott then presented the trophies.

The League Runners up to Mel, Gill, Pam and Alison from the Oak then the league Winners Mike W, Simon, Alex, Terrence and Mike S from the Golf club.

The Cup runners up Jan C, Jan M, Paul and Brian from the Alma and finally the winners Mike, Aisling, Dave and Don, the Station A.

Finally the quiz coordinator was thanked for producing and running the Cup Quiz and his work through the year to which the reply was “See you all next season”.

Ferry Terminal ‘extremely busy’ due to ongoing Holyhead closure

Published

on

PEMBROKE DOCK Ferry Terminal has been experiencing significant congestion today as ferry services remain under immense pressure following the closure of Holyhead Port earlier this month.

The disruption, caused by storm damage, has rerouted ferry traffic through Pembrokeshire, leading to long queues and crowded facilities at the terminal.

The Herald can confirm that it has been very busy today with cars, lorries, and foot passengers queuing in large numbers. Staff are working tirelessly to manage the influx, directing vehicles and assisting passengers as they prepare to board the heavily booked ferries.

A spokesperson for the Port of Milford Haven said: “We are working closely with ferry operators and local authorities to ensure traffic flows as smoothly as possible, but the sheer volume of vehicles is causing unavoidable delays.”

Travelers are being urged to arrive early for their sailings and to remain patient as the terminal operates at full capacity.

Both Stena Line and Irish Ferries have increased capacity on their Pembrokeshire routes, deploying larger vessels, including the Stena Adventurer and the MV James Joyce, to handle the surge in demand.

From our position at the terminal, our photographer has captured photos showing long lines of vehicles, groups of foot passengers carrying luggage, and port staff coordinating efforts to ease congestion.

Authorities are advising non-essential travelers to consider rescheduling their journeys where possible and to monitor updates from ferry operators closely.

Festive celebrations at St Davids Cathedral this weekend

Published

on

ST DAVIDS Cathedral is set to host two special events on Sunday (Dec 22), offering a blend of joyful participation and traditional carol singing to mark the Christmas season.

In the morning, families are invited to the Scratch Nativity at 11:00am. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed as wise men, angels, sheep, or shepherds and take part in an unrehearsed retelling of the Christmas story. Canon Leigh described the event as: “Complete, wonderful chaos for an hour… but with some poignant, thought-provoking moments to centre ourselves on the real meaning of Christmas.”

Later in the evening, the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight will take place at 7:00pm, featuring the Cathedral Choir. The event, steeped in tradition, will see the cathedral bathed in candlelight as carols and scripture readings fill the historic space.

Doors will open at 5:45pm for those seeking unreserved seating, and a large turnout is expected for this beloved Christmas celebration.
