RWE deploy cutting-edge carbon capture technology at Pembroke Power Station
RWE, Wales’ largest power generator, unveiled its plans today to advance three groundbreaking carbon capture projects, positioning itself as a trailblazer in the mission to decarbonise the UK’s power sector.
The blueprint entails RWE’s development proposals for deploying cutting-edge capture technology at its Pembroke Power Station. Once realized, the project will facilitate the long-term generation of up to 2.2 gigawatts (GW) of secure, flexible, and decarbonised power, capable of capturing approximately 5 million tonnes of CO2 annually.
This staggering achievement is tantamount to removing one million petrol-driven cars from the roads.
RWE, operating the UK’s largest fleet of gas-fired power stations and a prominent renewables generator, believes that carbon capture and storage (CCS) represent a viable solution for delivering reliable, dispatchable, and decarbonised power generation. By embracing CCS technology, RWE aims to support the UK’s ambition to decarbonise its power system by 2035 while simultaneously ensuring long-term energy security.
Furthermore, the three proposed CCS projects not only contribute to the UK’s energy stability but also form an integral part of RWE’s global aspiration to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, an objective aligned with the Paris Agreement.
Tom Glover, the UK Country Chair for RWE, expressed his optimism, stating, “In order to decarbonise the power sector, support security of supply and enable large-scale industrial decarbonisation, it is important that clean gas generation projects are developed.
Carbon capture can support the expansion of the other renewable and low carbon technologies that RWE is a leader in deploying, by providing energy security through firm and flexible provision of electricity that is not reliant on weather. I am pleased to announce our plans for three UK carbon capture projects, representing an important step in our progression towards decarbonising our existing gas fleet.”
The Pembroke project serves as a cornerstone of RWE’s Pembroke Net Zero Centre (PNZC), a significant multi-technology decarbonisation initiative in South Wales. This initiative, in conjunction with the South Wales Industrial Cluster, supports the broader decarbonisation of the region’s industry.
Leveraging RWE’s decades of experience and expertise in power production, the PNZC brings together three crucial energy infrastructure components: the decarbonisation of the gas-fired Pembroke Power Station, the on-site production of green hydrogen, and the development of floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea.
Richard Little, Director of PNZC, acknowledged the project’s significance, affirming, “We are pleased to announce our plans for a Pembroke Power Station carbon capture project. This project is a key element of our Pembroke Net Zero Centre and important to support the Welsh government’s ambitions for carbon neutrality. The project will support decarbonisation of the power sector, support security of supply, and large-scale industrial decarbonisation.”
RWE is currently making progress with initial environmental studies and surveys while preparing the necessary information to apply for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Track 2 Phase 2 cluster sequencing funding application process.
This funding process is specifically dedicated to carbon capture projects located in proximity to carbon capture storage or transport facilities.
The Pembroke carbon capture initiative is one of three novel projects spearheaded by RWE across the UK, all striving to provide a practical solution to delivering reliable and dispatchable power stations while supporting the UK’s target of achieving a net zero energy industry by 2035.
Apart from the Pembroke venture, the other projects are planned for RWE’s existing station at Staythorpe and a newly built gas-fired power station with carbon capture at Stallingborough.
These projects are strategically located near proposed CO2 networks or possess access to shipping facilities, facilitating the safe transportation and storage of CO2. Together, these initiatives will form a vital component of a robust and comprehensive energy network, ensuring stable and secure generation whenever the need arises.
RWE said further information regarding the project will be made available in the coming months, including community information events.

Safe and warm hubs are providing vital support this winter, offering welcoming spaces for people to stay warm, connect with others, and access advice and services during difficult times.
In the aftermath of Storm Darragh, which left many households without power, these community hubs have become a lifeline. Developed locally to meet local needs, Warm Hubs also offer practical support, including advice on debt and welfare entitlements; opportunities to try new activities and form friendships; and information about financial and community services.
This week, the Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Jane Hutt, visited the safe and warm hub in Llanddewi Velfrey in Pembrokeshire to meet volunteers and to thank them for their dedication.
Lynda Hill, representing Llanddewi Velfrey Village Hall Committee, has volunteered at the hub since 2002 helping to manage the hall and organise events.
She said “We are particularly grateful for the help from the Warm Rooms initiative as it helps us to help those in our community who are in most need. Many homes in this area lost their electricity and water for quite a long time during and after Storm Darragh. Fortunately, this didn’t affect the hall so we opened to provide access to a warm space where anyone could use cooking facilities, toilets, charge their phones, and connect with others when they may have otherwise been isolated.
“Listening to stories of other halls and community initiatives whose representatives attended the meeting, it was inspiring to hear the huge range of support that is available across Pembrokeshire. We all want people to know we’re here throughout the winter, and that the Warm Rooms hubs provide a warm and friendly welcome for people of all ages and background.”
Across Wales, safe and warm hubs also offer practical support, including advice on debt and welfare entitlements; opportunities to try new activities and form friendships; and information about financial and community services.
In October, the Welsh Government announced £1.5m in funding to ensure hubs can continue their crucial work this winter.
The Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Jane Hutt, said: “Hubs, like the one in Llanddewi Velfrey, are a great example of communities coming together to support one another during tough times. Volunteers are at the heart of these spaces, creating a warm and inclusive welcome for people in need.
“We know the winter months can be difficult for many, which is why we’re doing all we can to alleviate financial pressures and maximise incomes. Our investment in safe and warm hubs forms part of a wider package of support to help people through the cost-of-living challenges.”
Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary services has been instrumental in channelling the funding for warm spaces and hosts a regular forum for those involved with community buildings, which is invaluable for sharing ideas and experience.
Other Welsh Government initiatives to help communities this winter, include:
the Welsh Benefits Charter to remove barriers to claiming benefits;
£30 million for the Warm Homes programme to improve energy efficiency in lower-income households;
an extra £700,000 for the Fuel Bank Foundation to help those who pre-pay for their fuel and are at risk of disconnection – building on the £5.6m provided since 2022; and
an additional £1.7m to support families and individuals facing food poverty, building on the £2.8m the already allocated this year, bringing the total to more than £24m invested in this area since 2019.

Stonehenge may have been built to unify the people of ancient Britain
THE RECENT discovery that one of Stonehenge’s stones originated in Scotland supports a theory that the stone circle was built as a monument to unite Britain’s early farmers nearly 5,000 years ago, according to a new study by researchers at UCL and Aberystwyth University.
In a research article published in the journal Archaeology International, academics analyse the significance of the recent discovery of the Scottish origin of the six-tonne Altar Stone, which confirmed that all of the stones that make up Stonehenge were brought to Salisbury Plain from many miles away.
In their new paper, the researchers say that Stonehenge’s long-distance links add weight to the theory that the Neolithic monument may have had some unifying purpose in ancient Britain.
Lead author Professor Mike Parker Pearson from the UCL Institute of Archaeology said: “The fact that all of its stones originated from distant regions, making it unique among over 900 stone circles in Britain, suggests that the stone circle may have had a political as well as a religious purpose – as a monument of unification for the peoples of Britain, celebrating their eternal links with their ancestors and the cosmos.”
Co-author Professor Richard Bevins of Aberystwyth University, said: “It’s really gratifying that our geological investigations can contribute to the archaeological research and the unfolding story as our knowledge has been improving so dramatically in just the last few years.
“Our research is like forensic science. We are a small team of earth scientists, each bringing their own area of expertise; it is this combination of skills that has allowed us to identify the sources of the bluestones, and now the Altar Stone.”
The study has been published (on 20 December) the day before the winter solstice, when the setting sun dips below the horizon over the middle of the Altar Stone and between the two largest upright stones (one of which is now fallen). During this winter period, Neolithic people feasted close to Stonehenge at the great village of Durrington Walls, and the midwinter solstice was probably central to these events.
Stonehenge is famous for these solar alignments on the solstice and even today attracts large crowds to the site on the shortest and longest days of the year. In addition, it was also the largest burial ground of its age. Some archaeologists think it might have been a religious temple, an ancient observatory and a solar calendar, and this new research adds a political dimension.
Professor Parker Pearson, a Professor of British Later Prehistory, added: “We’ve known for a while that people came from many different parts of Britain with their pigs and cattle to feast at Durrington Walls, and nearly half the people buried at Stonehenge had lived somewhere other than Salisbury Plain.
“The similarities in architecture and material culture between the Stonehenge area and northern Scotland now make more sense. It’s helped to solve the puzzle of why these distant places had more in common than we might have once thought.”
Stonehenge’s 43 ‘bluestones’ were brought from the Preseli Hills in west Wales some 140 miles away, while the larger ‘Sarsen’ stones were hauled from their sources at least 15 miles away to the north and east of the stone circle.
Transporting these massive monoliths was an extraordinary feat. Although the wheel had been invented, it had not yet reached Britain so moving these massive stones must have required the efforts of hundreds if not thousands of people.
The researchers point to how Stonehenge’s horizontal Altar Stone is similar in size and placement to the large, horizontal stones of the stone circles of northeast Scotland, where the Altar Stone originated.
These ‘recumbent stone circles’ are found only in that part of Scotland and not in the rest of Britain, so there may have been close ties between the two regions. Megalithic stones had ancestral significance, binding people to place and origins. The Altar Stone may have been brought as a gift from the people of northern Scotland to represent some form of alliance or collaboration.
It is difficult to pin down a precise date when the Scottish Altar Stone was brought to Stonehenge, but it probably arrived around 2500 BCE around the time that Stonehenge was remodelled from its original form.
This is the timeframe when the Neolithic builders erected the large sarsen stones forming an outer circle and the inner horseshoe of trilithons – paired upright stones connected by horizontal ‘lintels’ – that is present today. The Altar Stone lies at the foot of the largest trilithon, which frames the midwinter solstice sunset to the southwest. This was the second stage of construction at Stonehenge, long after the first stage (around 3000 BCE) when it is thought the bluestones from Wales were erected.
This second iteration of Stonehenge was built at a time of increasing contact between the people of Britain and arrivals from Europe, mainly from what are today the Netherlands and Germany. The researchers suggest that this period of contact may have been what spurred this second-stage rebuilding, and the monument was a reaction to these newcomers meant to unite indigenous Britons.
The new arrivals brought with them knowledge of metalworking and the wheel and, over the next four hundred years, their descendants – known as the Beaker people on account of the distinctive pots they buried with their dead – gradually replaced the population of indigenous Britons, and people with this European ancestry became the dominant population across the island.

Wales’ fire services respond to 26 Christmas incidents last year – stay safe!
FIREFIGHTERS across Wales attended 26 incidents on Christmas Day last year, according to figures obtained through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service recorded the highest number of incidents with 21, while South Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended three, and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service responded to two.
SIX-YEAR OVERVIEW
Over the past six Christmases, Welsh fire services responded to 147 incidents on Christmas Day:
- North Wales Fire and Rescue Service: 77 incidents
- South Wales Fire and Rescue Service: 52 incidents
- Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service: 18 incidents
Incidents by Year:
- 2018: 18 incidents
- 2019: 27 incidents
- 2020: 27 incidents
- 2021: 27 incidents

COOKING AND CHRISTMAS TREES
Cooking appliances were a leading cause of fires during the festive period, with 22 incidents recorded over six years. These included incidents caused by burnt food, built-up grease, and igniting fat.

He said: “If you’re going away for Christmas or leaving your home unattended, fire safety should be a top priority.”

- Switch off heaters, ovens, and chargers before leaving.
- Keep kitchen counters and stovetops clear of flammable items.
- Test smoke alarms and replace batteries if necessary.
Taking these precautions can help reduce the risk of fires over the festive season.
