Interviews ‘secured’ after Murco jobs fair

Supporting workers: Cllr Jamie Adams with representatives of
Bluestone, Natalia Miles and Debbie Downs
MORE than 300 former employees of Murco and people who work for their supplier companies visited a Jobs Fair this week at the Bridge Innovation Centre in Pembroke Dock. The Jobs Fair was organised by JobCentre Plus on behalf of the Murco Task Force. Visitors were able to see and discuss many jobs on offer from places as far afield as Canada and Saudi Arabia, as well as from local firms in Pembrokeshire. A number of interviews were secured.
Cllr Jamie Adams visited the Jobs Fair and spoke to a number of the businesses offering jobs. He said: “The County Council are pleased that they were able to support Job Centre Plus in facilitating this event at the Bridge Innovation Centre. “While I was pleased to see so many jobs on offer for skilled workers it was somewhat disappointing to see that a large proportion of these were outside of Wales and that skills and knowledge will inevitably be lost to Pembrokeshire.”
He added: “We are also aware that a number of other local businesses will suffer as a result of the situation at Murco. “We urge them to contact either the Council’s regeneration team based in the Bridge Innovation Centre or one of the other public sector partners represented on the Task Force so that assistance can be offered to these businesses and to their staff.” Speaking last week, Cllr Paul Miller told The Herald: “Murco staff need jobs and I am pleased that something is being done for them.
I am, however, very concerned about the impact of the risk of loss to the local economy. It is better something is done than nothing, but I will be fighting to make sure that we have skilled and well-paying jobs available in Pembrokeshire.”

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
