children’s shelter in India
DICK VENABLES met his target of raising £10,275 by cycling 216 miles for charity. Dick, 84, pedalled into St Davids, the smallest city in Wales, accompanied by friends and family on Saturday (Jun 25) and was welcomed by the Mayor of St Davids, Chris Taylor , and local well-wishers.
Dick left Rising Brook Baptist Centre in Stafford on Thursday , June 16, with a send-off by Jeremy LeFroy MP, Senior Minister , Martin Young , and family and friends. Accompanied by his grandson , Marcus Janes, Dick cycled 216 miles to St Davids in commemoration of his late wife , Caty . He also wanted to raise funds for a children’s shelter in India. Dick had already risen over £8,500 of his £10,000 target amount via his Facebook page , ‘Grandad’s Tour de Wales’ .
Dick cycled approximately 40 miles each day , taking in Newport, Wellington, Shrewsbury, Montgomery, Newtown, Llangurig, Newbridge, Carmarthen, Puncheston and Caerau Bach, including a gruelling cycling over the Preseli Hills.
Dick is now raising money for Dalit Freedom Network UK, a trafficking prevention organisation , who work with women and children from poor and marginalised communities , such as that of the Dalits (Untouchables) in India. The £10,275 raised will go to the Pratigya Children’s Shelter , which provides a safe place for young girls who are at risk of being forced into sex slavery in the southern Indian state of Telangana. Currently , 40 girls are now able to grow up in a loving, caring and compassionate environment, with access to counselling, healthcare, nutritious meals and a quality education , with the charity provid ing hope and opportunities that would otherwise be denied to them.
Jeevaline Kumar, Director of Pratigya India, says: “We are so grateful to Dick – he is an amazing man. The money that he is raising will help us to expand our shelter so that we can care for 100 girls who otherwise would be severely exploited and abused. The shelter is making a huge difference in the lives of these children – here they can live with dignity. All of the girls in our shelter have dreams and ambitions, aspiring to become doctors, lawyers and engineers. We are working hard to make all their dreams become a reality. Thanks to Dick we can do this for even more girls.”

Castlemartin man back before magistrates over multiple alleged assaults
Defendant remanded on conditional bail ahead of further hearing
A CASTLEMARTIN man has appeared repeatedly before magistrates this month over a string A 40-year-old man from Castlemartin has made repeated appearances before magistrates this month in connection with a series of serious alleged offences, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH), intentional non-fatal strangulation, common assault, and criminal damage.
Anthony Alcock, of Pwll Street, Castlemartin, is facing six linked charges stemming from incidents said to have occurred earlier this year. These appear to relate to the same complainant in what is understood to be a single ongoing domestic abuse prosecution.
During recent administrative hearings at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court, Alcock did not enter pleas while matters of bail and case management were addressed.
Charges Include:
- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH)
- Intentional non-fatal strangulation
- Common assault on a woman
- Criminal damage in a domestic context
- Additional assault allegations involving the same complainant
- Breach of bail conditions
Alcock was initially granted conditional bail but was subsequently brought before the court on two occasions for alleged breaches. On those instances, magistrates remanded him in custody ahead of further hearings. He was later re-granted conditional bail, subject to strict conditions such as no contact with the complainant and exclusion from specified locations.
Magistrates have now declined jurisdiction, ruling that the case—particularly the more serious charges involving non-fatal strangulation—is too grave for summary trial. It has been committed to Swansea Crown Court for plea, trial, or sentencing.
No detailed evidence has been presented in open court at this preliminary stage. Alcock remains on conditional bail pending his next appearance at the Crown Court.
