Emma to ‘hit the wall’ in marathon challenge
EMMA HUGHES, who hails from Tenby but who now lives and works in Shanghai, China, is to run the ‘Great Wall of China’ half marathon this weekend in aid of the Kidney Wales Foundation.
A former pupil of Tenby Infants, Junior and Greenhill Schools and also a former English Teacher at Ysgol Greenhill, Emma is now working at the British International School in Shanghai where she teaches English to the International Baccalaureate Curriculum.
Emma is running the race for the Kidney Wales Foundation in support of her brother Adam, who was diagnosed with kidney failure in April 2013 and is now undergoing daily dialysis whilst on the kidney transplant waiting list.
The Great Wall of China half marathon is no ordinary course, being regarded as one of the toughest in the world as it includes 5164 steps up and along the Great Wall of China and a route through a village near the Great Wall. Some of the steps are as much as 18 inches deep!
Emma would be delighted if you were able to support her and readers can sponsor Emma at www.justgiving.com/EmmaAngharadHughes/ , where donations to the Kidney Wales foundation can be increased by gift aid. Alternatively you can text EAHU99 £5 to 70070
Emma’s brother Adam works as a Learning Support Assistant at Ysgol Greenhill and whilst he is ‘doing ok’ and stable on dialysis, he continues to wait anxiously for the phone call from the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff to say that a kidney is available.
There are over 10,000 people on the kidney transplant waiting list and the wait, due to the shortage of donors could be as long as five weeks or five years with the average wait being three years. The only criteria for available kidneys is the best match and who has been waiting the longest, with each patient given a point for every day they are on the UK wide waiting list.

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
