Football Weekly – Division 1 Preview
Last weekend the number of games to go ahead due to the bad weather was very few. Although it’s not bright sunshine the prospect of a fuller complement of fixtures this weekend looks promising. As always there are some tasty fixtures up and down the county as league tables and key battles are now well established.
Pembrokeshire Division 1 Fixtures 27-01-24 –
Carew vs Goodwick United
Neyland to Tenby
Pennar Robins vs Fishguard Sports
Kilgetty vs Hakin United
Clarbeston Road vs Monkton Swifts
Milford United vs Merlins Bridge
Goodwick United remain unbeaten in the league this season and look like firm favourites to lift the trophy at the end of the season. They travel to Carew this weekend, a team who are in need of points sitting just one place above the relegation zone. Behind Carew in 11th place are Neyland who have a must win home game when they face an out of form Tenby outfit, who themselves are in danger of getting dragged into a relegation scrap. Fishguard Sports currently define must win games at the moment as time and games are running out for Phil Jones’ team to start picking up points. Despite a solid season so far, Pennar away is still an opportunity for the bottom side to pick up a point or more.
Kilgetty host Hakin, on the back of a big derby win. A tricky tie for the Vikings and this fixture smells like an upset maybe on the cards. Richie Cope will be key in the hosts midfield as they look to climb the league. Hakin find themselves in an unfamiliar position, not far behind leaders Goodwick but even so they look unlikely to pose a serious title threat.
Matthew Fox will be using last week’s disappointment as motivation for his team this week, a home game gives Clarby the chance to bounce back. The visitors however have had a brilliant 2024 so far, more like the Monkton Swifts we expected to see in September. Finally Steve Parks’ Milford United are on a high after last week’s result and will be relishing the challenge posed by Merlins Bridge this weekend. The Wizards travel to Marble Hall third in the table and similarly to Hakin not likely to pose a title challenge, however every game is a chance to continue building and developing for boss Kennedy.

Pembrokeshire Vikings triumph over Port Talbot panthers
PEMBROKESHIRE VIKINGS faced a tough challenge against the formidable Port Talbot Panthers at Milford Haven RFC on Sunday afternoon. In a fiercely contested battle, the Vikings emerged as worthy winners with a final score of 33-17.
The Vikings’ try scorers included Dave Roberts, Karl Bate, Shaun Treadwell, Richard Williams, and Jack Elliott. Callum Power added to the scoreboard with four successful conversions. Karl Bate’s standout performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
A special mention goes to Sean Phillips, who made a welcome return to the team. Phillips delivered a brilliant 30-metre line break, unselfishly passing the ball to Dave Roberts, who crossed under the posts. His contribution exemplified the team spirit that defines the Vikings.
Matches between the Vikings and the Panthers are always marked by fierce rivalry, but also by strong friendships forged on and off the field. The team eagerly anticipates the return fixture in 2025.
The Vikings also extended their gratitude to Barry from Pembrokeshire College, a loyal supporter of the team. Additionally, thanks were given to sponsors Austwel LTD, Hedley Asset Management, and The Pembrokeshire Herald for their ongoing support.
Next match: A historic showdown
This Saturday, the Pembrokeshire Vikings will travel to Llandaff RFC to make history in a match against Rygbi Senedd Cymru. The team looks forward to another thrilling encounter as they continue their successful season.

2024 Sport Pembrokeshire Awards Finalists announced
THE finalists for the 2024 Sport Pembrokeshire Awards have been announced.
In total, 252 nominations were received and, following a selection meeting, the judging panel has named 39 finalists.
Matt Freeman, Manager of Sport Pembrokeshire, said: “I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to provide nominations.
“Every year it gets harder to narrow the nominations down to three finalists and once again the quality of the nominees was enormously high.
“The number and quality of nominees just shows the strength of the sporting scene here in Pembrokeshire.
All the finalists will be invited to a grand presentation ceremony at Folly Farm on Friday, November 29th, where the winners will be announced.
The ceremony will also reveal the winners of two further categories – the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Chairman’s Special Achievement Award.
The awards are organised by Sport Pembrokeshire, Pembrokeshire County Council’s sport development team.
They are sponsored by Sport Pembrokeshire, Valero, Folly Farm and Pure West Radio.
The awards aim to recognise those people who have excelled in sport over the last 12 months, or who have given their time to coaching and organising grass roots sport.
