RNLI to ‘replace’ GP services in Tenby
THE LOCAL Health Board has confirmed to local MP Simon Hart that it has decided to fill the gap left by the GP shortage in Tenby by relying upon lifeboat volunteers.
Having announced during its much derided ‘consultation’ that GP’s would fill the gap left by the closure of Tenby’s Minor Injuries Unit, only to have it emerge that no agreement had been reached with local doctors’ practices to do anything of the sort. Demonstrating a touching faith in the capacity of unpaid volunteers to make up for the loss of expert medical services and the ability of the Ambulance Service to locate Tenby in an emergency the Board told the Carmarthenshire West and South Pembrokeshire MP that this summer: • It will leaflet holiday camps and train staff to direct people to the appropriate service by ‘Choosing Well’; • The Red Cross will run a First Aid service at weekends AND on Bank Holidays; • It will pilot an ‘Enhanced Pharmacy Scheme’; • It will work in co-operation with third parties, i.e. with the RNLI’s Beach Response Team with the support of the Ambulance Service. The Board also told Mr Hart that a locum GP, was due to start at the end of last month and a practice nurse would be available until the end of August. Local tourism businesses are already concerned that there will be serious difficulties if guests fall ill and cannot get to appropriate health care in good time. One B&B owner said: “The Board appears to think that having failed to convince GP’s to make up for cutting the MIU, now there is a GP shortage it can rely on the Lifeboat to help it out in the high season. They must be crackers.” Simon Hart told the Herald “The staff at Tenby Doctors surgery do a fantastic job and it is not their fault that they have been put in this position by the policy makers in Cardiff. Also, to suggest that the failures in the system are absorbed by the already heavily committed RNLI is extraordinary and rather sums up a complacent attitude to a very serious situation”

The game kicked off with a burst of energy as Johnston’s center half, Craig Bendall, seized an early opportunity to put his team ahead just ten minutes into the match.
