Last pair in final over victory
St Ishmaels (144 for 10 in 44.3 ovrs) lost to Lawrenny (146 for 7 in 44.2 ovrs)
LAWRENNY’s Jamie Lewis and Rob Williams held their nerves in the final over to claim victory against St Ishmaels and gain their side valuable points. Tish were all out for 144 as Philip Cockburn and Danny Howells were the only batsmen to really trouble the scorers. Wickets fell at regular intervals in Lawrenny’s innings, but a half century from Joe Kidney and a late knock of 23 from Jonathan Mathias guided them to their total. St Ishmaels wobbled early on in their innings falling to 17-3 as all three openers fell to the bowling of Rob Williams. However, Cockburn and Howells put on 73 for the fourth wicket before Cockburn was caught by Matthew Lewis off the bowling of James Buckle for 35. Danny Howells batted on but he did not receive much support and he eventually fell for 52 when he was brilliantly caught and bowled by Buckle. Matthew Phillips made a late contribution with 17 but Buckle and Rob Williams continued to take wickets as St Ishmaels were all out for 144. Buckle finished with 3-31 from his eight overs, but Rob Williams was the star bowler taking five wickets for 23 runs from his 11 overs. Lawrenny also made a shaky start to their innings as they slipped to 15- 2, but opener Andrew Cole laid a good platform making 29 before he was bowled by Andrew Pawlett. When Steve Lewis and Ian Jenkins both fell cheaply Lawrenny were struggling on 83-5. Joe Kidney and Jonathan Mathias then shared 47 for the sixth wicket before Mathias fell for 23. Kidney followed soon after for a knock of 53 (three fours and a six) when he was bowled by Andrew Williams. That left Lawrenny on 142-7 and with two new batsmen at the crease St Ishmaels would have fancied their chances of taking the win. Rob Williams and Jamie Lewis had other ideas as they knocked off the four runs needed for victory. Promotion, relegation and everything in between.
As we come to the end of the 2023-2024 season it’s time to look at the winners and losers so to speak as most promotion and relegation battles are now all sewn up.
We begin at the very top where Goodwick United have blown away the first division to become deserved champions elect. At the opposite end of the table Fishguard Sports struggled all season and we comfortably relegated, going down with them are Neyland who’s relegation was confirmed a few weeks ago. Neither team were cut adrift and battled right until the end which is credit to both outfits, sometimes relegation can act as a spring broad and both clubs will be hoping this is the case.
Monkton Swifts reserves were the outstanding team in the second division and were a cut above the rest on their journey to becoming league champions on 56 points with an impressive plus 61 goal difference. As Monkton can’t be promoted due to their first team being in the first division it allowed both Herbrandston and St Ishmaels to be promoted. Herbrandston finished in third on 40 points, whilst the Mice just beat them to second place ending up on 42 points. Both clubs will now use the summer to prepare for the step up that awaits.
At the opposite end of the division, Cosheston never really got going and after their points deduction ended on a lowly 6 points which is never going to be enough to avoid relegation. The second relegation place was much closer with St Clears, Carew reserves and Broad Haven all being in a dog fight for the majority of the season. Broad Haven showed good fight and character which steered them clear of trouble while Carew found form at a key time, which means St Clears will play their football in the third division next season.
