Dangerous driving under the spotlight

Pictured are emergency service personnel: Taking part in the scenario
at Milford Haven Youth Centre, with local young actors playing the part
of the injured
YOUNG people aged 16 to 24 took part in a road safety event yesterday (Oct 8) focusing on the potentially serious consequences of dangerous driving.
The hard-hitting event, which included shocking live action crash scenarios, took place at Milford Haven Youth Centre.
It was co-ordinated by Nick Hudd, Community Youth Worker for Pembrokeshire County Council.
Nick said it aimed to address the particular issues faced by young drivers – and their passengers.
“Young people aged 16 to 24 are classed as at high risk on the road,” he said. “There are lots of factors involved, including peer pressure, many people in the car, and sometimes the influence of drugs and alcohol.”
The young people viewed two films of people involved in real road collisions – including graphic footage of the results of such collisions – before going outside to watch a live-action scenario.
The scenario involved the local emergency services, with young actors playing the part of victims.
“They thought it was very hard-hitting but effective,” said Nick. “With this age group, the more realistic the message, the better.”
After that, they took part in workshops on the impact of injury on loved ones, the hazards of country roads, peer pressures, drugs and alcohol, and other issues. The workshops encouraged them to explore the effect of collisions from the perspective of others, including emergency personnel.
Taking part in the event were Milford Haven Youth Centre, the Milford Haven Neighbourhood Policing Team, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Milford Youth Matters, St John’s Ambulance and Choices Cymru.
Sion Slaymaker, Pembrokeshire’s Community Safety Manager for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said:
“Events such as these are a fantastic opportunity to relay key road safety messages to young people in the county.

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
