Newgale: Public meetings announced

Newgale2000x76912 A NUMBER of options for a new road through or around Newgale are to be unveiled at public consultation meetings next week.

The options include a hard sea defence structure or elevating the road to the same height to be built on an embankment or on a viaduct.

There is also an option for a completely new road alignment.

However, hydrodynamic modelling for Option Two shows that any defence or road would have to be some six metres (about 20 feet) above the existing road.

As this is likely to have an adverse effect on the landscape, part of the meetings will be given over to gauging public reaction to such a large structure.

The options are a result of an ongoing detailed analysis of the coastal processes that affect Newgale which is extremely vulnerable to flooding.

Called the WelTAG study, it is due to be completed at the end of the year.

The public consultation will take place at Solva Memorial Hal between 5pm and 8pm next Thursday (Oct 20) and between 10am and 4pm next Friday (Oct 21)

The meetings have been arranged by consultants Atkins who are preparing a masterplan with the aim of considering a new vision for Newgale should the existing main access route be relocated.

It is anticipated that follow-up meetings will take place in mid-December and in the New Year.

Arrest after fatal Carmarthenshire hit-and-run

A MAN has been arrested following a fatal hit-and-run collision in Llanpumsaint, Carmarthenshire, on Monday (December 23), which claimed the life of 38-year-old Aaron Jones.

The incident happened near Caer Salem Baptist Chapel between 6:45pm and 7:45pm while Aaron was walking his dog. Police said the vehicle involved, a blue car with noticeable damage, was travelling northbound through the village at the time of the collision.

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that the vehicle believed to have been involved has now been located, and a 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop for a collision, and failing to report a collision.

Specially trained officers are supporting Aaron’s family, who have asked for privacy during this difficult time.

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “We are appealing to anyone who may have seen the vehicle or has dashcam footage from the area during the relevant times to contact us immediately.”

The road remains closed while investigations continue, and residents can expect an increased police presence in the area.
