Staff concerns as consultant quits
AMID reports that worried senior paediatric staff at Withybush Hospital have asked that the Health Board postpone planned changes, the Pembrokeshire Herald understands that an Accident and Emergency consultant has resigned in protest, describing the proposed changes as “unsafe”.
It is has been claimed that the unnamed consultant has refused to remain in charge of his department without overnight paediatric care as it would be “far too risky and dangerous.” The shuffling of emergency paediatric care off to Withybush’s Accident & Emergency department is a key element of the Health Board’s purported “safety net” for continuing service provision at Withybush hospital, when the Board slashes provision there from August 1. Chairman of SWAT, Dr Chris Overton, said: “The plan to move maternity and paediatric services and that will mean that A&E will not be sustainable. They’ve said they expect only 100 deliveries in the new midwife-led unit, which is only one or two a week, so the midwives won’t deliver enough babies to retain their skills so that will close quite quickly. “In three or four years’ time everything will drift to Glangwili Hospital.” The Health Board say it will be advertising for a new consultant. A spokesperson said: “The health board can confirm that one of the emergency medicine consultants has resigned, but the reasons provided to the health board for the resignation are not related to changes in the service model. We will advertise for a replacement post in the near future.” Bearing in mind the purported difficulties in recruitment that the Board have used as an excuse to shut key services at Withybush, it is difficult to see how it will be able to safely bridge the yawning chasm in its plans without consultant cover at Withybush.

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
