Gateway project to employment

Big launch: Engagement Gateway Mentors, Rachael Mylum and Dannieala Griffiths
A WALES COUNCIL FOR VOLUNTARY ACTION (WCVA) project delivered by Pembrokeshire College is drawing to a close after proving to be a great success.
Launched in September 2013 the European Social Fund and WCVA funded Engagement Gateway project has provided over 90 qualifications from Levels 1-3 in areas including customer services, first aid and food safety, preparing people for the work environment and creating paths to employment in a wide range of fields. Over the last nine months the Engagement Gateway project has successfully helped to return individuals across the county to employment, engage them in further study opportunities and encourage them to participate in volunteering schemes. With a dynamic, hands on approach, Engagement Gateway Mentors, Rachael Mylum and Dannieala Griffiths, have aided the 71 participants of the project to achieve personal goals; enhancing their self-confidence, and elevating their employability. Through the project each individual has experienced a diverse and personal journey. Engagement Gateway Mentor Rachael commented: “Working on this project has given us a great sense of satisfaction helping people progress and seeing them moving forward as individuals.” To date, as a result of the Engagement Gateway project, 15 individuals have found full-time employment, 13 are undertaking further study and an additional nine people are currently involved in volunteering. However, these figures do not reveal the true success of the project as the project has also provided many participants with valuable skills and the confidence needed to prepare themselves for employment in the future. To celebrate the project’s achievements, all participants were invited to a beach clean event in Freshwater East on June 17, followed by a buffet lunch at The Longhouse – a chance to applaud each other’s successes and support the local environment too.

Community gathers to remember Corrina Baker
Lanterns and balloons released in emotional acts of remembrance
FAMILY, friends and members of the local community came together to remember Corrina Baker at a series of moving events held across west Wales this week.
Corrina’s funeral took place on Monday (Dec 15), a month after her death, with a public service held at St Mary’s Church. Mourners lined the route as her coffin was carried on its final journey in an elegant horse-drawn carriage, before a private cremation later took place at Parc Gwyn crematorium in Narberth.

Later that evening, shortly after 6:00pm, friends and relatives gathered at the Quayside in Cardigan for the first of two acts of remembrance to celebrate her life. Lanterns were lit and released into the night sky above the town as some of Corrina’s favourite songs were played.

On Tuesday afternoon (Dec 16), a second tribute was held near the location where Corrina was found. Twenty-one pink balloons — one for each year of her life — were released into a clear blue sky, each carrying personal messages in her memory.
Floral tributes continue to be laid at the Netpool, while a GoFundMe appeal set up in Corrina’s memory has raised more than £2,300. She has been described by those who knew her as “funny and bright”.
Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Baker’s death is ongoing. A 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
