Large turn-out for candlelight vigil
THE LARGE turn-out for Monday night’s candlelit vigil in Pembroke Castle took the organisers completely by surprise, according to Gareth Jones, Chairman of the Royal British Legion for Pembroke and Pembroke Dock. “It was outstanding,” he explained. “We had planned for twenty maybe thirty people but there were more than a hundred present. It clearly touched enough people to make a real difference” The Light’s Out vigil, which was led by the Vicar of Pembroke Rev Roger Jones, included readings and hymns as well as a memorable solo by Natasha Djkoto of Westgate Chapel.
The commemoration, which marked the centenary of the outbreak of war in August 1914, began at 10pm in the castle grounds and drew to a fitting conclusion around the cenotaph almost an hour later. It was at this point the congregation stood in silence to honour more than 240 local heroes who had given their lives in a war that was supposed to end all wars. As 11pm approached every candles was extinguished and the large crowd moved away in a poignant silence, leaving a solitary unlit candle nestling among two wreaths at the base of the cenotaph. Clive Collins, Town Councillor and Trustee of the Castle, said “It was a privilege to be there to honour those who gave so much so that we can enjoy the freedoms we possess today.
No one can give more than to give your life and I can feel a shiver down my back even now as I think of what those boys gave. I was there to support their memory, to support our town and this castle. In addition to this I am also a school governor and want to show the children of the area what they can look up to”. Pastor Rob James, who expressed his thanks to the organisers and the vicar for being asked to assist in the vigil, added: “I was particularly thrilled to be allowed to read one of the most powerful passages you will find in the Bible. Jesus said ‘No one has greater love than this than that he is willing to lay down his life for his friends’. I guess we can honour their memory in no finer way than by heeding his call to love one another as we enjoy the freedom they have bequeathed us.”

Castlemartin man back before magistrates over multiple alleged assaults
Defendant remanded on conditional bail ahead of further hearing
A CASTLEMARTIN man has appeared repeatedly before magistrates this month over a string A 40-year-old man from Castlemartin has made repeated appearances before magistrates this month in connection with a series of serious alleged offences, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH), intentional non-fatal strangulation, common assault, and criminal damage.
Anthony Alcock, of Pwll Street, Castlemartin, is facing six linked charges stemming from incidents said to have occurred earlier this year. These appear to relate to the same complainant in what is understood to be a single ongoing domestic abuse prosecution.
During recent administrative hearings at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court, Alcock did not enter pleas while matters of bail and case management were addressed.
Charges Include:
- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH)
- Intentional non-fatal strangulation
- Common assault on a woman
- Criminal damage in a domestic context
- Additional assault allegations involving the same complainant
- Breach of bail conditions
Alcock was initially granted conditional bail but was subsequently brought before the court on two occasions for alleged breaches. On those instances, magistrates remanded him in custody ahead of further hearings. He was later re-granted conditional bail, subject to strict conditions such as no contact with the complainant and exclusion from specified locations.
Magistrates have now declined jurisdiction, ruling that the case—particularly the more serious charges involving non-fatal strangulation—is too grave for summary trial. It has been committed to Swansea Crown Court for plea, trial, or sentencing.
No detailed evidence has been presented in open court at this preliminary stage. Alcock remains on conditional bail pending his next appearance at the Crown Court.
