Military testing to resume in Cardigan Bay danger zone

MILITARY testing will take place next week in Cardigan Bay, with live firing scheduled off the coast of Aberystwyth.
Qinetiq, which operates the Ministry of Defence’s Parc Aberporth site in Parcllyn, has confirmed that testing will occur on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (Feb 25-27) in a designated danger area at the heart of the bay.
The area will be closed to shipping between 11:00am and 4:00pm on these days while the exercises are carried out.
The zone, which has been relatively quiet since the start of the year, is used for military training and testing, including low-flying aircraft, missile evaluation, laser firing, and bombing.
Mariners planning to enter the area are advised to check the schedule in advance and contact Range Control on 01239 813480 or 01239 813760, or via VHF Channel 11 or 16 for the latest updates.
The Cardigan Bay danger area spans 6,500 square kilometres from sea level to unlimited height and has been in use since the Second World War. Announcements regarding activity are made over VHF radio at the start and end of each session.
A warning notice issued ahead of next week’s testing reminds mariners and coastal visitors:
- The schedule is subject to last-minute changes.
- If navigating through the danger area, consult safety information online and use the provided contact numbers.
- If unidentified metal objects such as projectiles or shells are found, do not touch. Instead, report them to the Coastguard on VHF Channel 16 immediately.
For further details, contact Range Control during working hours from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
