A MAN from Pembroke Dock humiliated Nigel Farage on a live radio show on Sunday (Jul 17).

Richard Jones called into Nigel Farage’s LBC radio show and lured the former UKIP leader into a discussion on language by saying: “One of my big concerns is people coming to the country and not actually learning English. I don’t see how you can integrate if you don’t speak the language of the country.”

Farage then states that he “couldn’t agree more” with the statement, however Richard followed it up by questioning him about his own linguistic skills: “I was wondering why you’ve spent more than 20 years living in Belgium and yet you don’t speak a word of Flemish, German or French?”

Taken aback, Farage tried to quip his way out of the conversation by saying he was “very good with a French wine list, alright?” but Richard didn’t let it stop there.

He pushed Farage who closed the conversation saying “I do speak a bit of French, I’m not a brilliant linguist, I’ll admit it.”

Haverfordwest man admits criminal damage and assaulting pensioner

Published

A HAVERFORDWEST man has pleaded guilty to assault and criminal damage following an incident in Winch Crescent just before Christmas.

James Britton, 32, of Coronation Avenue, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (Feb 25), where he admitted to causing actual bodily harm to 74-year-old cancer survivor Kevin Bunston and damaging his belongings, including a mobile phone, glasses, and dentures, worth £915.98.

The court heard that the offences took place on December 23, 2023. Britton was charged with criminal damage under the Criminal Damage Act 1971 and assault occasioning actual bodily harm under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861.

Magistrates remanded Britton on conditional bail, with restrictions preventing him from contacting the victim directly or indirectly and barring him from entering Winch Crescent. A pre-sentence report has been ordered ahead of sentencing, which will take place at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court on March 18.

Britton is required to attend the next hearing, scheduled for 10:00am in Courtroom 1.

Overdue invoices in Wales reach 21-month high, new R3 research shows

Published

on

THE NUMBER of overdue invoices on the books of Welsh businesses reached a 21-month high in January, according to new research from R3, the UK’s insolvency and restructuring trade body.

R3’s analysis of data provided by Creditsafe shows that businesses in Wales had a total of 152,973 overdue invoices on their books last month. This was the highest number on record since April 2023’s figure of 153,837.

Overdue invoice numbers rose by 12.7% year-on-year from January 2024’s total of 135,773, and rose by 5.2% when compared to the previous month’s total of 145,366.

Bethan Evans, Chair of R3 in Wales, says: “The last couple of years have been incredibly challenging for Welsh businesses. While a decline in inflation levels in 2024 provided some relief by slowing the pace of rising costs, this was offset by a host of other mounting challenges.

“Ongoing supply chain disruptions throughout last year made it much harder for businesses to operate smoothly, while high and rising energy costs have continued to squeeze profit margins. These difficulties were further compounded by new pressures introduced in the Autumn Budget, with businesses now having to reassess their finances in the face of rising Employers’ National Insurance Contributions and an increase in the minimum wage.

“It’s clear from these statistics that many firms are now feeling the impact of these ongoing challenges, with businesses having to delay more and more payments.”

The total number of Welsh companies with overdue invoices on their books rose to 18,631 in January, the highest level since February 2023’s total of 18,648.

The number of companies with overdue invoices on their books rose by 6.4% year-on-year from January 2024’s total of 17,510.

Bethan, who is a partner at Menzies LLP continues: “Over the past couple of years, many businesses struggled to pay their bills on time, and as conditions have not improved enough, these debts have built up over time. This has placed immense pressure on Welsh businesses, with more and more now unable to meet their payment deadlines amidst ongoing financial challenges.

“If conditions don’t improve early this year, we could see more companies facing even greater pressures, with some turning to insolvency processes to address their financial issues.

“I would urge businesses in Wales to seek advice at the first signs of financial distress. Conversations around money can be extremely difficult, but by facing your problems early, you’ll have more time to think about your next steps and more potential options available to you for resolving your concerns.”

Tenby Charity shop to host Coffee and Cake fundraiser

Published

on

WALES AIR AMBULANCE’S much-loved Coffee and Cake fundraiser is back for 2025, and the Charity’s shop in Tenby will be hosting its own event for the public this Saturday morning (1 March).

In January, the Charity announced the return of ‘Coffee and Cake’, an event which encourages supporters to ‘get together’ and host their very own Coffee and Cake party on behalf of the lifesaving service.

The fundraiser coincides with the Charity’s 24th anniversary and takes place during March.

The ‘Coffee and Cake’ celebrations raise funds to help the Charity provide lifesaving critical care across Wales, wherever and whenever it is needed.  Every year, Wales Air Ambulance needs to raise £11.2 million to keep the helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road.

Joining the celebration this year is the Charity’s shop in Tenby, based on Upper Frog Street. On St. David’s Day morning, members of the public can visit the shop, make a donation and enjoy a drink and a snack – all of which will make a lifesaving difference.

Emma Moore, Senior Individual Giving Manager for the Wales Air Ambulance, said: “It’s the Charity’s 24th birthday on St. David’s Day. Our shop in Tenby will mark the occasion by hosting its own Coffee and Cake event on Saturday 1 March, between 10am and 12pm.

“Everyone is welcome and we’d be delighted if you joined us for some nice treats – you’ll be making a lifesaving difference and that really is the icing on the cake.”

Members of the public are also invited to host their own ‘Coffee and Cake’ event in their community during March. Those who are interested can register via the Charity’s website – www.walesairambulance.com/sign-up.

Event hosts will receive special access to a range of fundraising materials, including a fundraising pack, digital resources, invitations, posters and cake labels.

Whether a gathering with friends and family or a party in a school or office, this event is open to everyone – both online and in person.

Emma added: “Many of us love a catch-up with a slice of cake, and whether part of a community group, school, business or an individual, we would love to help and support you with your own event.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re an avid baker or prefer to buy your cakes from a shop, the sales you make on your delicious treats will support our lifesaving Charity, and it’s the perfect opportunity to get together with friends, family or colleagues.”

Wales Air Ambulance is consultant-led, taking hospital-standard treatments to the patient and, if required, transferring them directly to the most appropriate hospital for their illness or injury. For the patient, this can mean hours saved when compared to standard care and is proven to greatly improve survival and early recovery.

It is delivered via a unique third sector and public sector partnership. The Wales Air Ambulance Charity relies on public donations to raise the £11.2 million required every year to keep the helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road.

The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) supplies highly skilled NHS consultants and critical care practitioners who work on board the Charity’s vehicles.

This advanced critical care includes the ability to administer anaesthesia, deliver blood transfusions and conduct minor operations, all at the scene of an incident.

As a pan-Wales service, its dedicated crews, regardless of where they are based, will travel the length and breadth of the country to deliver emergency lifesaving care.
