Mounting complaints: More Computer Solutions Wales customers claim losses
Business owner issues legal threats and IPSO complaint to this newspaper while refusing to answer detailed questions about customers who say they were ‘ripped off’
MULTIPLE customers and former associates have come forward to The Pembrokeshire Herald alleging they were left out of pocket after dealings with Computer Solutions Wales, a business operated by Steven Grant.
Following our earlier reporting more people have come forward. The Herald has now spoken to a growing number of individuals who describe similar experiences involving upfront payments, missing equipment, delays, and difficulties obtaining refunds or wages.
The allegations span a period from 2024 into 2025 and involve sums ranging from hundreds to several thousand pounds.
Grant denies wrongdoing and has refused to provide detailed comment on specific allegations, instead issuing legal threats demanding the newspaper cease reporting on the matter.
The Herald investigation is continuing.
Customers describe similar experiences
While each case has its own circumstances, complainants who contacted the newspaper independently described recurring themes:
• Requests for payment upfront
• Delays or lack of communication
• Explanations involving disputes with landlords or access to premises
• Assurances that work had been completed or refunds issued
• Difficulty recovering money or property
The Herald has reviewed bank statements, payment confirmations, correspondence, and message exchanges relating to several of the complaints.
There is currently no finding of criminal liability, and disputes of this nature are typically matters for civil courts. However, the number of individuals reporting similar experiences has raised public-interest concerns.
NHS worker says she lost laptop and repair payment
One of the most recent complainants, Emma Venables, an NHS worker, says she paid £589 in October 2024 to have her son’s water-damaged laptop repaired.
Bank records seen by the Herald confirm a Faster Payment of £589 made on Friday (Oct 11, 2024) to Computer Solutions.
Ms Venables says communication became sporadic despite repeated attempts to contact the business.
Messages reviewed by the Herald show Grant stating the laptop had been repaired but was locked inside premises due to a dispute with a landlord.
Ms Venables later gained access to the premises through a letting agent but says the laptop was not present.
Grant allegedly suggested the device may have been taken by others with access to the building.
Despite later agreeing to refund the payment, Ms Venables says no money was returned and she has been left both without the device and out of pocket.
She told the Herald the situation caused significant distress during a period when she was grieving the death of her husband.

Animator claims nearly £3,000 loss
Cardiff-based animator Rebecca Merrell says she transferred £2,964.55 in December 2024 for a custom-built computer system which she says was never delivered.
Bank documentation supplied to the Herald confirms the transfer was made via Faster Payments to an account linked to Grant’s business.
Ms Merrell alleges she received repeated assurances the computer had been completed and would be delivered, including claims it was already in Grant’s vehicle awaiting transport.
She further alleges she was sent screenshots appearing to show a refund had been issued, but no payment was ever received.
The Herald has reviewed copies of documents she provided.
Ms Merrell says she was unable to work for months without a replacement computer and had to borrow money from family to purchase another system elsewhere.
She described the experience as having a serious impact on her confidence and mental wellbeing.
Claimed £1,750 back on her credit card
Another customer, a Pembrokeshire woman who asked not to be named, told the Herald she paid £1,750 by credit card in January 2024 after being promised a new Apple computer and the transfer of family photographs from an older device belonging to her late husband.
She said she was initially told the work would take “10 days to two weeks”, but claimed that over the following seven to eight months she received repeated explanations and delays, including references to illness, family issues and problems with the business premises.
“He always sounded plausible,” she said. “But I didn’t want to challenge him too much because he still had my old computer.”
She said she was later told the replacement device was ready and had her name on it, but this proved untrue.
After seeking advice from Trading Standards, she pursued a claim through her credit card provider under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act and was eventually refunded the full £1,750.
Her original computer was later returned by a member of staff.
Another customer reports lost laptop and payment
The Herald has also spoken to another customer who says they lost both a laptop valued at approximately £1,500 and £589 paid for repairs after handing the device to the business.
They say they were later told the computer had been inside premises affected by a landlord dispute and could not be accessed.
No refund was received.
Further individuals have contacted the Herald describing disputes involving payments for goods or services they say were not delivered or completed.
These claims are currently being reviewed.

Former worker alleges unpaid wages and intimidation
Separate to the customer complaints, The Herald has also been contacted by a former worker who says he was left out of pocket after working for Computer Solutions Wales in 2022.
The individual, who has asked not to be publicly named due to concerns about potential legal repercussions, provided a detailed written account and says he is willing to supply supporting evidence privately.
He says he applied for an IT engineer role advertised in Pembrokeshire and was hired by Steven Grant while expecting his first child and attempting to establish a career in the sector.
According to his account, he was never issued with an employment contract and was not asked to provide basic employment documentation such as proof of identity, National Insurance details, or right-to-work verification.
He says that after initially working part-time alongside another job, he was encouraged to increase his hours and eventually left his other employment to commit more fully to the role.
However, he alleges that the duties he was asked to perform differed significantly from what had been represented, including running errands, distributing leaflets, and carrying out tasks unrelated to IT engineering.
He further claims he was instructed to travel to jobs across Wales and England at his own financial risk, including paying for vehicle hire, fuel, food, and accommodation upfront, with only verbal assurances he would be reimbursed.
The worker says he was later dismissed shortly before his first scheduled payday and was assured he would still be paid for work completed.
He alleges that payment was repeatedly delayed, with explanations including banking problems and administrative issues, and says that when partial payment was eventually received there were no payslips or confirmation of employment records.
He also claims he received communications he interpreted as legal threats and was instructed not to attend business premises.
The worker says the financial instability and stress contributed to his decision to leave Pembrokeshire and return to previous employment elsewhere.
Grant did not respond to questions from the Herald regarding these allegations.
Timeline of disputes
Information provided to the Herald suggests the disputes span several months.
Some complainants describe making payments in late 2024 and experiencing ongoing communication issues into early 2025.
Others report refund promises that they say were not fulfilled.
The Herald is continuing to verify additional timelines as more individuals come forward.
Grant refuses detailed comment
The Herald contacted Steven Grant with detailed questions covering each allegation and the evidence provided by complainants.
He declined to respond to the specifics.
In correspondence, Grant said: “My mental health isn’t great.”
He also warned that further articles would result in legal action.
Legal threats issued to newspaper
Grant subsequently sent what he described as a “final and formal legal notice” to the Herald demanding:
• Immediate cessation of reporting
• Removal of published material
• A retraction
• Written confirmation within seven days
The Herald is continuing its reporting in the public interest.
Grant has also lodged a complaint with the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO).
Right to reply offered
Grant has been given multiple opportunities to respond to the allegations raised by customers and former associates before publication of this article.
He declined to provide any substantive comment.
Customers considering legal action
Some complainants say they are considering civil claims or seeking advice from Trading Standards.
Others say personal circumstances prevented them from pursuing action sooner.
Investigation continues
Since the Herald began reporting on Computer Solutions Wales, additional individuals have contacted the newspaper with further accounts.
Journalists are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing documentation to establish whether those complaints can be reported on the record.

Harbwr Brewery plans for Saundersfoot Old Chemist pub
A FORMER Pembrokeshire county councillor who owns many hostelries in the county has submitted plans to the national park to rejuvenate a “tired” seaside pub.
In an application to Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Mike Evans of Harbwr Brewery, a former county councillor and national park authority member, seeks a partly retrospective permission for works at the Old Chemist Inn, The Strand, Saundersfoot.
The works include proposed internal alterations to the basement and ground floor, a new rear balcony area to replace the existing one, improvements to front façade, a change of use of shop space to food/drink, and installation of seating booths in the rear garden.
It says the changes proposed will increase the number of staff employed to 15 full time and 10 part-time.
No objections to the proposal were raised by local community council Saundersfoot.
A supporting statement through agent David J P Morgan RIBA Architect, says the 19th Century pub “has endured many alterations during its lifetime and at present it needs improvements to echo the recent upgrading of the village, both in the general tourism support facilities, as well as the new innovative harbour development,” with the appearance and interior facilities “tired” and needing “works both inside and outside to enable the inn to achieve and provide the high levels of cuisine and facilities now expected”.
It says: “The Inn has been purchased by a local company who have a number of establishments within Saundersfoot and Tenby. The company is owned by local people, they use local produce, they employ local labour and work actively with local communities to achieve the high standards expected.
“The proposals include internal alterations to the internal layout of basement and ground floor which will improve bar, kitchen and food facilities and allow a much more varied menu including lots of local produce and locally caught seafood dishes. New toilet facilities will be provided on both levels to cater for the increase in visitors to the Inn.”
It adds: “The applicant has recently purchased the small retail unit on the ground floor. This was a single room, situated in between the two entrances into the Inn and with its own entrance door from the street.
“The current proposals include integrating this unit into the public house bar area and consequently the application includes a change of use from retail to the serving of food and drink.”
It goes on to say: “The rear ‘beer garden’ will be improved to allow more space and comfortable seating areas.
“The applicant is well known for the extensive use of external plotted plants in open areas at their establishments and the garden area will give the opportunity of using such to soften the garden area whilst giving greater habitat opportunities for birds and insects.”
There were initial objections from the Park’s buildings conservation officer to some of the parts of the design, a 2025 application being withdrawn early that year; amended plans being later submitted.
The application will be considered by park planners at a later date.

Calls for award-winning Pembrokeshire sauna to be permanent
CALLS to allow the permanent siting of an award-winning Pembrokeshire seaside village outdoor sauna, which has been featured in the national press, have been submitted to the national park.
Back in June 2024, a temporary two-year permission for a mobile wood-fired sauna at Saundersfoot harbour was granted by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park’s development management committee.
Since then, a further application by Kerry Evans of Hwyl Outdoor Sauna to make the siting permanent has been submitted to national park planners.
A supporting statement says, since its introduction the sauna has “become a popular and valued amenity for both residents and visitors, offering a space focussed on health, wellbeing and community connection”.
It went on to say: “The overall sentiment within the village has been strongly supportive, with many residents recognising the sauna as a valuable asset that enhances the amenities in Saundersfoot,” adding: “Hwyl Outdoor Sauna has received positive attention in regional and national press helping to promote Saundersfoot as a destination for coastal wellbeing and outdoor experiences.
“Media coverage has highlighted the sauna as an example of the increasing popularity of sea swimming and sauna culture around the UK coastline.
“Hwyl Outdoor Sauna has been featured in two books on the best saunas in the UK.
“The business has also been recognised through tourism and hospitality awards, further demonstrating the quality of the experience provided and the positive contribution it makes to the local visitor offer.”

Back in February, the business, set up by former superyacht worker and mum-of-two Kerry won Sauna of the Year 2026/27 at the Wales Prestige Awards.
At the time Kerry said: “I could not be more proud of what I have achieved with Hwyl. I am so grateful to my wonderful team, who have made this journey not only possible but genuinely so much fun.”
Kerry ploughed a legacy from her beloved late father into the venture of a Pembrokeshire seafront sauna.
The application for allowing the sauna to be permanent added: “Through the Welsh Government I have been able to secure the funds to install a cold-water shower on Saundersfoot Harbour, which will be open year-round. This will be achieved via Hywel Outdoor Sauna and a weather proofing fund, from the Welsh Government. This facility has also a GoFundMe to raise the remaining costs.”
It concludes: “Hwyl Outdoor Sauna has established itself as a valued wellbeing facility that benefits both residents and visitors. It enhances the amenities available in Saundersfoot, supports the local economy by encouraging additional visitor activity, and contributes positively to the community through charitable support and engagement.
“The permanent siting of the sauna would allow this successful local small business to continue operating and provide these benefits to the village in a stable and sustainable way.”
The application for a permanent facility will be considered by park planners at a later date.

Welsh Fed members engage with Labour candidate on key retail issues ahead of election
FIONA and Vince Malone, owners of Tenby Stores, in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, and members of the Federation of Independent Retailers (the Fed), met with Marc Tierney, Welsh Labour candidate for Ceredigion Penfro and Pembrokeshire County Councillor in the upcoming Senedd elections on May 7.
The meeting on Saturday, February 28, focused on the critical challenges facing independent retailers and followed the publication of the Fed’s manifesto for the Welsh election.
Key issues addressed during the meeting included the impact of rising business rates bills on small shops, as well as the significant social and economic value that post offices and convenience stores offer to their neighbourhoods. The Malones highlighted the rising costs resulting from above-inflation increases in the national minimum wage and higher National Insurance Contributions (NICs) that have placed further financial strain on independent businesses such as theirs, and others across Wales and the rest of the UK.
The importance of post offices in providing essential banking facilities was emphasised, underscoring their role in sustaining local economies through their range of services including postal and banking as well as government services such as vehicle tax renewal and passport applications.
Additionally, the conversation touched on the pressing issue of retail crime. The Malones showed how they had taken steps to reduce this problem, including the implementation of extensive CCTV coverage and the utilisation of AI technology, but that the threat remained.
With the introduction of the deposit return scheme (DRS) in Wales on the horizon, the Malones expressed their support for initiatives aimed at improving recycling rates. However, they raised concerns regarding the inclusion of glass in the scheme in Wales, highlighting that it would be difficult for small shops to implement because of the dangers associated with broken glass and weight involved in moving it.
Vince Malone said: “I want to thank Marc again for his visit and discussing these important issues and for his clear interest. Fiona and I remain committed to advocating for the interests of small shops – as members of the Federation of Independent Retailers – working with all parties at the Senedd ahead of May’s election and beyond.”
Marc Tierney said: “Vince and Fiona are active retailers, who go the extra mile for their community and are well known for their advocacy for the independent retail sector, not just in Wales but across the UK. My visit highlighted the importance of their postal service, banking hub and convenience shop. Providing these services under one roof is exactly the type of model that can sustain services in our rural, coastal communities. I look forward to working with them in the run-up to the election and beyond.”
